There is nothing like a warm, caring home in a cold winter,\nespecially when you are studying for the exam. Hoping to make the campus a home\naway from home, some departments and student organisations at UM earlier gave away\nfree hot drinks and sweet soups to help students stay warm and energised during\nthe exam period. Many students who have benefitted from the freebies say they\nwere very touched by these small gestures of love.<\/p>\n\n
Stop\nfor a Hot Drink<\/b><\/p>\n\n
\u201cWe want to make the students feel UM is like a big\nfamily,\u201d says UM Librarian Dr. Paul Poon, who stood at the entrance of the\nlibrary during the exam period watching students receiving free hot drinks.\nThird-year student surnamed Chan welcomed the activity. \u201cA hot drink can be\nvery refreshing when you are tired from study,\u201d says Chan. Some students suggested\nthat the library could consider giving away free glucose-based candies as well\nas glucose is good for learning and memory.<\/p>\n\n
There were no candies, but UM\u2019s Christian Fellowship\ngave away self-made sweet soups along with cell phone straps with angel charms\nand \u201cGod Loves You\u201d notes during two days of the exam period to wish the students\ngood luck. Xia Dong, a master\u2019s student in her second year, says, \u201cIt feels as\nif someone is thinking of me, and it feels so sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
Apple,\nOrange & Pear, Your Health We Care<\/b><\/p>\n\n
Vitamin-rich fruit is good for the brain too. The\nStudent Resources and Services Section (SRS) gave away free fruit to students\nliving in the East Asia Building and off-campus dormitories. It is the second\nyear SRS organised this activity. For seven days during the exam period they\ngave away 150 pairs of apples and oranges to remind the students to stay\nhealthy. A second-year student of economics says that no other university has\nhad similar activities, which shows that UM really cares about its students.\nStudent Thandi from Africa highly praises the activity, saying that it could\nencourage students to eat more fruit.<\/p>\n\n
Caring is not reserved for students. The Human\nResources Office (HRO) earlier bought big, juicy pears for the 1,423 staff\nmembers as part of its Staff Caring Programme. To make sure the pears arrive at\nthe staff\u2019s hands fresh and in peak condition, HRO colleagues finished\nDIY-gift-wrapping within two days.<\/p>\n\n
Inflation-resistant\nRestaurant<\/b><\/p>\n\n
Recently a conversation between workers at the\nrestaurant in the Research and Development Building is going viral on the\ninternet. According to the conversation, the restaurant is willing to provide free extra portions of rice\nand coffee cream when requested despite the surging inflation. When approached\nfor confirmation of this rumoured conversation, a cashier at the restaurant disclosed\nthat it was not intended for the students to know about this, but yes the\nconversation did take place, adding that the restaurant has been operating at\nUM for three years and although rice prices have been increasing year after\nyear, the restaurant has tried to avoid increasing prices wherever possible,\nbecause what matters the most is that students can have decent meals at\naffordable prices. \u201cIf the student needs more rice, no problem, as long as he\nor she doesn\u2019t waste food,\u201d says the cashier.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
