How are UM students\ndoing? Are they ready?<\/p>\n\n<p>Opportunity Favours the Prepared Mind<\/p>\n\n<p>Nowadays if you ask a university student what she would like\nto do after graduation, she might tell you, jokingly, \u201canything except joining\nthe ranks of the unemployed\u201d. Although joining the ranks of the unemployed upon\ngraduation is a grim reality in some Asian places with increasingly tough competition,\nit\u2019s a very unlikely scenario for students in Macao where the unemployment rate\nhovers blessedly around just 1.7 per cent and several ongoing major projects in\nCotai promise even more job opportunities in the future.<\/p>\n\n<p>But if one is unprepared, opportunities will only slip through\nhis fingers. Yan Cheong from the Faculty of Business Administration is a firm\nbeliever in the maxim that opportunity favours the prepared mind. A major in Gaming\nand Hospitality Management major, Yan found a job as assistant in the HR department\nat Melco Crown Entertainment before graduation, which she admits was a pleasant\nsurprise because she never expected that an internship opportunity would turn\ninto a full-time job with excellent working environment and employee benefits. But\nwhat appears to be just a fluke of luck could also be due to her preparedness. She\nstill remembers vividly how frustrated and confused she felt when she started\ncareer planning in her third year to try to figure out what she might like to\ndo after graduation. \u201cPersonally I think work-related knowledge and skills, a\ngood attitude, the willingness to ask question, and the courage to seize every\nopportunity are very important if you want to find a good job,\u201d says Yan. \u201cI\nstarted out at Melco as an intern, and thanks to the recommendation of my supervisor\nwho was pleased with my work, I became first a part-time assistant, and then a full-time\none. The whole process was unexpectedly smooth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Like Yan, Sun Chao, a master\u2019s student of accounting from\nmainland China, who is rumoured to have had at least 100 interviews since he graduated\nfrom college, has also found a job before graduation. In fact Sun received\nseveral offers, and finally he chose the Zhuhai-based Huafa Group, a well-known\nstate-owned real estate business. For Sun, studying at UM has been a horizon-broadening experience that has not only helped him grow intellectually and\nemotionally, but has taught him to think in a more flexible and creative way\nand improved his teamwork skills, and he believes these have combined to give\nhim an edge on the job market.<\/p>\n\n<p>It\u2019s Never Too Early to Start Career<\/p>\n\n<p>Planning For many students, career planning has received\nless attention than it deserves. While \u201cBetter late than never\u201d holds true in\nmany aspects of our lives, when it comes to career planning, \u201cbetter early than\nlate\u201d seems to be the way to go. Yan believes that the latest time one should start\ncareer planning is in the third year. She suggests that students should consider\ndoing part-time jobs if they can make sure it doesn\u2019t get in the way of their\nstudies, because working part-time not only helps them find the type of work that\nis best suited to their skills and interests, but also gives them a chance to\nmeet new people. Francesca Tam Wong Ha, functional head of FSPC, echoes Yan\u2019s opinion\nand goes one step further. She suggests that it\u2019s best to start career planning\nin the second year, because that helps the students to plan what skills need to\nbe acquired in the next few years. She adds that students should avail\nthemselves of the services and opportunities provided by FSPC. For instance students\ncould take the personality and career interest tests to have a better idea\nabout which career direction they wish to take.
