Last year we interviewed Brook Tan because\nshe was not only admitted to UM\u2019s inaugural\nfive-year bilingual bachelor of law programme with exam exemption, but also\nreceived the Grand Lotus Scholarship, one of the most coveted scholarships\noffered by UM. The reason for our second interview with Tan is because within\nless than ten months of her studies in Portugal she achieved B2 level, the\nthird highest of five levels, in the CAPLE (Centre for Evaluation of Portuguese\nas a Foreign Language) examination, which is all the more remarkable when\ntaking into account the fact that she had no prior knowledge of the language\nbefore she studied at UM. What is her secret to progressing so quickly in\nPortuguese learning?<\/p>\n\n

A\nDifferent Learning Experience<\/p>\n\n

Our first impression of Tan during our\nsecond interview was that she appeared more mature and independent compared to\nthe first time we interviewed her. When we told her that, she smiled and said, \u2018I had the opportunity to study abroad during the first year, and\nthat experience helped me grow a lot.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

Tan was one of the 26 students who joined\nthe first intake of the inaugural five-year bilingual bachelor of law programme\nlaunched last year. After studying at the University of Coimbra for only a\nyear, she made a tremendous progress in her Portuguese language skills, achieving\nB2 on the CAPLE (Centre for Evaluation of Portuguese as a Foreign Language)\nexamination, a test widely used to determine the fluency of non-native Portuguese\nspeakers. \u2018It\u2019s really not easy to\nmaster a new language in a short time, so I must study extra hard to prepare\nmyself for the law courses in the next four years which will be conducted in\nPortuguese,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n

Having a clear goal is half the battle.\nWhile in Portugal, Tan attended classes from nine in the morning to eight in the\nevening, with only a one-hour lunch break every day. \u2018We had ten courses, five in the faculty of arts and five in the\nfaculty of law. Portuguese professors speak very fast, and tend to join words\ntogether, so in the beginning I had difficulty understanding what they were\nsaying, but still I tried my best to listen and took notes diligently,\u2019 she said. To accelerate her progress in Portuguese learning, she\nlistened to local radio stations and audio books after class. \u2018The first thing to conquer when you are learning a foreign language is\nthe pronunciation. You must imitate how native speakers speak like a baby\nimitates adult speech, and gradually you will develop a feel for the language,\nand when that happens, learning will become easier,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Immerse\nin the Language and Culture<\/p>\n\n

One\nof the best ways to learn a foreign language is to immerse yourself in the\nlanguage and culture. When she was in Portugal, Tan learned by chance that a\nchurch near her dormitory was offering a free Portuguese course. A Christian\nherself, Tan made a bold decision to enroll herself in the course despite her\nlimited knowledge of the language. Through the course she met a kind lady who\nis a doctor, and despite their big age difference, they quickly became good friends.\n\u2018After some\nclasses, she encouraged me to keep a diary in Portuguese and offered to help\ncorrect grammar mistakes in my writing,\u2019 Tan said. \u2018She also invited me to her\nhome on weekends to give me one-on-one lessons in Portuguese. Every time she\nwould recommend some of the best Portuguese literature and asked me to read the\ntexts so she could correct my pronunciation. Now even when I\u2019m back in Macao, I still\nwrite one article in Portuguese every week and email it to her for correction.\nShe has helped me a lot with my Portuguese, and I\u2019m so grateful that I met such a kind person in Portugal.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

Last\nChristmas, instead of using the long holiday to travel to other European\ncountries, she went to another Portuguese city\u2014Porto\u2014to spend the holiday\nin a local family. \u2018They are\nrelatives of a friend of my father\u2019s, and although we\ndidn\u2019t really know each other, they were very nice to me. We made\nPortuguese desserts and decorated the fireplace and Christmas tree together,\nwhich allowed me to experience firsthand how Portuguese people celebrate Christmas.\nI learned practical Portuguese phrases during the ten days I stayed in their\nhouse. I will always cherish the beautiful memories of that time,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

First\nDay in Portugal Felt like an Adventure<\/p>\n\n

Graduating\nfrom high school and entering college brings many changes, and for Tan, the\nbiggest change has been the need to take care of everything by herself. \u2018When I was in high school,\nmy parents and my school would arrange a lot of things for me, but now I need\nto learn to do many things by myself,\u2019 she said.\nBefore her trip to Portugal, she had never travelled far from home alone, so\nthe first day she arrived at the University of Coimbra, she felt a mixture of\nnervousness and excitement as if she were on an adventure. She didn\u2019t know a soul there and\ndidn\u2019t know the place\nwell. Even such mundane daily task as finding a place to eat suddenly became\nlike a challenge.<\/p>\n\n

\u2018The campus of\nthe University of Coimbra is very big, and when we first moved into the dormitory,\nwe didn\u2019t know where the\nteaching section was located on the campus, and it took about 20 minutes to\nwalk from our dorm to the canteen,\u2019she recalled.\u2018So at that moment it hit\nme, to successfully transit into the new role of a college student, the first\npriority is not study, but taking care of everyday tasks like finding a place\nto eat.\u2019This experience\ngave Tan a greater appreciation of how convenient it is to have the daily\nlogistics taken care of.\u2018In the\nresidential colleges here at UM, the college canteens prepare three meals for\nus, and the staff and fellow students in the college are very caring and\nhelpful. After class, I could ask a teacher study-related questions or chat\nwith college members. I feel really lucky to be able to live and study at UM,\u2019she said.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Find\na Way to Study Smart<\/p>\n\n

In\nthe year she spent in Portugal, Tan mainly focused on learning the Portuguese\nlanguage. It was only after she came back to UM that she started her law\ncourses. And after a two-month trial and error process, she has already found a\nsmart way to study law\u2014learning\nabstract, complicated legal concepts and terms by combining\nthem with real-life examples. \u2018During the year I\nwas studying in Portugal, I had more time to think about how to find a smart\nway to study, and I also set some goals for myself. With clear goals, you will\ntake fewer detours,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n

Gentle, polite, goal-oriented, and\nclear-headed. These positive traits Tan possesses will no doubt prove helpful in\nher pursuit of her dream to become a prosecutor. But her current biggest hope\nis to learn Portuguese and law well.\u2018This programme is\nnot easy, but if I can graduate successfully, I will have a competitive edge,\nbecause there is a great demand in Macao for legal professionals who are proficient\nin both Chinese and Portuguese,\u2019she said.<\/p>
