No worries. At UM, you\ncan practise English anywhere and anytime you want.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Begin with Curiosity<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018Girls are emotion Ninja. Their\nfavourite weapon is silent treatment. That\u2019s their\nspecialty dish,\u2019 Honee Wang, a second-year student\nmajoring in English Studies, was delivering his humourous speech in English. \u2018My boyfriend pisses me off, so I won\u2019t talk\nto him until he says sorry. But girls, for us guys silent treatment is not a punishment;\nthat\u2019s a freaking reward. Boys and girls think differently,\nespecially while driving. We boys always want to drive faster, but you girls,\u2019\nhe paused and made his lips \u2018sexy\u2019 with a red marker pen, \u2018are just busy with\na fast make-up.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>The whole class laughed. The audience voted him the\nfunniest speaker in the Humourous Speech Contest, which was part of the English\nFestival. \u2018He deserved the\ntrophy,\u2019 said Joshua Lee, the judge and senior\ninstructor from the English Language Centre (ELC). \u2018Honee\ndid a good job in exaggerating his emotions. His stories were well-focused and\nhis humour was self-deprecating. That kind of humour is safer as it doesn&#8217;t insult\nanyone.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p><br\/><\/p><p>A Contest\nbeyond Humour<\/p>\n\n<p>The contest was part of the ELC\u2019s\neffort to promote the use of English on campus. Joshua was pleased that the students\ndrew upon their own life experiences and came up with original ideas. The\nsubjects of the participants\u2019 speeches range from\nrelationships to campus life to places they have travelled. However, the\ncontest was not just about public speaking or English fluency.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018Some of the speeches made us think deeper about different\nissues,\u2019 said Joshua. \u2018For\nexample, one speaker discussed how women obsess about their weight, but she\ndeconstructed it in a humorous way and ended with a positive message about\nbeing proud of who you are. It also gave students a chance to stretch their\ncreativity and imagination.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018Being funny in English, or any other\nlanguage for that matter, is difficult, especially if the language is not your mother\ntongue,\u2019 said ELC Director Dr Evelyn Doman. \u2018You have to know the logic of the language and figure out the\ncontext of the culture. I\u2019d say humour is the last thing\nlearners will acquire in learning a language.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018A lot of times when I go see a\nHollywood movie, I think that it\u2019s funny as I hear it\nin English and in my&nbsp;culture, but the audience reading the subtitles don&#8217;t think\nit\u2019s funny because it\u2019s over their heads or the&nbsp;humour is different in their culture,\u2019 she said. \u2018So\nI know who the \u201cforeigners\u201d are\nin a local movie theatre.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p><br\/><\/p><p>Motivating\nEnglish Festival<\/p>\n\n<p>Over ten workshops, including Jack-o-Lantern making and Crochet DIY, as\nwell as several contests, were held during the three-day English Festival in\nOctober. The English Festival takes place twice a year, with the aim of\nimproving students\u2019 English.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s good to have\nextracurricular activities in which students feel comfortable using English,\u2019 said Evelyn. \u2018There are no grades given, no\ncompetition. They\u2019re exposed to a friendly learning\nenvironment, where they feel they can make mistakes. That helps build their confidence\nin English.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018When students have a problem, they need\nto ask in English. So they have to think how to ask and learn to express\nthemselves with the vocabulary they know in English. That\u2019s how they develop their language skills,\u2019 said\nEvelyn. Apart from the festival, the ELC Chatroom provides another opportunity\nfor students to practice speaking English. \u2018They can\njust walk in when they have time. We\u2019re always here,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Find an English Buddy<\/p>\n\n<p>The more you expose yourself to a language, the faster you\nprogress in the language. That\u2019s\nwhy Joy Loi, a second-year student majoring in Hospitality and Gaming\nManagement, joined UM\u2019s Buddy Programme last semester.\nIt\u2019s a volunteer-based programme that offers an\nopportunity to build one-on-one relationships with foreign exchange students.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018I made many friends from the United\nStates and Germany. We speak English whenever we meet because it\u2019s our only common language,\u2019 said Joy. \u2018I wasn\u2019t very good at daily English\nconversation, because I mainly focused on reading comprehension when I was in\nhigh school. So the programme also helped improve my spoken English.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>As an English learner, Joy has made her share of English\nmistakes, some of which she says she would remember for the rest of her life. \u2018Once I wanted to share some snacks with\nmy buddy but I mispronounced the word \u201csnack\u201d as \u201csnake\u201d, and\nthis incident has become a running joke between us.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Commitment to English Project<\/p>\n\n<p>Practicing speaking English is perhaps one of the fastest\nways to improve one\u2019s English skills. And\nthat\u2019s why Dr Chiu Man Yin, programme coordinator of BA\nin English Studies, requires his students to act out English plays, a teaching\nstrategy he has been using since 1997 when he first taught the course\nIntroduction to Literature.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018A play text comes alive only when\nsomebody speaks it. So it\u2019ll be wonderful if I can get\nthe students to act it out, to speak the lines on stage, rather than just read\nit at home. It works wonderfully because it\u2019s a\nchallenge,\u2019 Dr Chiu said. \u2018Most\nstudents didn\u2019t think they could do it at first.<\/p>\n\n<p>Chiu often chooses a play with strong characters and good\nlines to make it easier for students to bring alive the dialogues instead of\nsimply reciting mechanically. \u2018That\u2019s not rote memorisation. You remember the lines because you\nunderstand the context and emotions, and then you reproduce them in your own\nway. This kind of training is really helpful in language learning.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Express\nYourself Concisely and Eloquently<\/p>\n\n<p>Another project that helps immerse the students in the English language is\nintensive training in English debates. Sindy Leong, a fourth-year student of communication\nwho has received the Best Debater Award\nin the Australasian Debating Championship, shares her experience in English\nlearning. \u2018In traditional classrooms, learning is\npredominantly a one-way process. We just sit and listen, rarely having the chance to speak up and practice\nspoken English. But in the debate training, we talk a lot and exchange views on\nwhat we\u2019ve read in the\nnewspaper, and all of this is done in English. It enhances not only our understanding\nof global current affairs but also our language ability,\u2019 Sindy said.<\/p>\n\n<p>When she joined the debating team, Sindy was told that English\nproficiency is a must and the skills to express herself concisely and\neloquently was what she needed to master next. \u2018I\u2019m now capable of impressing the judges\nwith humour and satire.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>English-Only\nClassroom<\/p>\n\n<p>All the courses at UM are delivered in English, except for the language\ncourses in Chinese, Portuguese,&nbsp;German, and Japanese. For some freshmen who were used to having courses\nconducted in Chinese before they started college, it may take them a little\nlonger to adapt to a new English-learning environment, but the effort will be\nworth it.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018Let\u2019s say you take a course in\nbusiness, which is not really about English, if it is delivered in English, and\nyou read the teaching material in English and answer the questions in English,\nall of those things reinforce your skills in English . Every course reinforces English\nproficiency,\u2019 Dr Chiu said. \u2018No\nmatter what we study, we would find it more frustrating to learn complex ideas in\na second language than in our mother tongue.
