Denis De Castro Halis, a senior lecturer from the\nFaculty of Law, travelled throughout South America.<\/p>\n\n<p><b>Destination:\nSouth America <\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>And Denis, as he prefers to be called, was\nnot kidding. In fact, he accomplished this feat while he was still a sophomore\nat college. Denis was born in Brazil. He completed two bachelor courses, in law\nand in social sciences, as well as two postgraduate courses, in contemporary\nphilosophy and education, in Rio de Janeiro, where he also received a master\u2019s\ndegree in legal and social sciences. Up until he left Brazil, first to France\nand then to China (first in the mainland and, then, in 2007 in Macao, when he\njoined UM), Denis had lived most of his life near a beach in Rio de Janeiro.\nGrowing up with travel-loving parents who often took him camping in scenic\nsites, Denis learned that travel is not about flying first class or staying in\nluxury hotels; but rather it is about being curious about people and exploring\nthe world in a simple and spontaneous way. In the summer holiday during his\nsophomore year, bitten by the travel bug, Denis decided that South America\nwould be his great adventure destination.<\/p>\n\n<p><b>An\nAuthentic Experience of Local Life <\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>He started from Brazil, travelled\nsouthwards to Uruguay, then went to Argentina, and travelled northwards via\nChile to Bolivia and Peru, until finally heading back to Rio de Janeiro, while\ncovering Brazil from west to east passing through the exotic wetland of\nPantanal (a huge area larger than some countries with wild animals such as\nalligators and a specie of leopard). Often he had to rough it on the journey \u2014\nstaying in a stranger\u2019s house, camping, or sleeping in a variety of unusual\nplaces with his sleeping bag. He also had to deal with the unexpected, such as\nbecoming the target of pickpockets and encountering an alligator while bathing\nin a lagoon. Amusingly enough, his homecoming treatment was less than\nwelcoming. When he returned to his neighbourhood, tanned and disheveled, with a\nlong beard, he was nearly driven away by the doorman who mistook him for a\nvagrant. But to Denis none of that matters in comparison to the unforgettable\nexperiences of him climbing the Andean mountains, driving across the desert in\nChile and the salt desert in Bolivia, and backpacking for four days through the\nInca Trail to reach the mystic Machu Picchu in Peru. When asked if he would\nhave preferred a more comfortable way of travelling, with nice hotels to stay\nin and all the logistics taken care of, he shook his head and said, \u2018Give me my\noriginal way of travel any day!\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>A spontaneous person by nature, Denis did\nnot make any detailed travel itinerary. He only had a rough idea of the route\nhe wished to follow. He usually travelled by coach or by hitchhiking. Once he\narrived at a destination, he would chat with the locals and make travel plans\nbased on their suggestions. This way of travel allowed him to build real\nconnections with the locals and gave him an authentic experience of their ways\nof life. \u2018When you have to ask local people\u2019 s help for making travel plans or\nitineraries or for directions to a supermarket or restaurant, you will have\nmore interactions with them, and only in this way can you have an authentic\nexperience of the local culture and life,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n<p><b>Things\nthat Make Life Beautiful <\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>More than once, Denis was struck speechless\nby the beauty of the natural scenery on his journey. But standing out in his\nmemories are not the stunning views, but the kindness of the people he met. One\nnight he met two female travellers while staying in the house of a local who\nrented out spare rooms to tourists, as is a prevalent practice in some tourist\ncities in South America. The girls invited him to join them in a bus tour to a\nscenic site the next day, he agreed and mentioned in passing that the next day\nwould be his birthday. The following day he was deeply touched when they threw\nhim a surprise birthday party on the bus. \u2018Turns out they got up early that\nmorning to buy the birthday cake and candles for me and then secretly brought\nthem onto the bus,\u2019 said Denis. \u2018I was deeply touched. We had just met the day\nbefore, and they didn\u2019t have any reason to do this other than to make me happy.\nIt was one of the most unforgettable birthdays I\u2019ve ever had.\u2019 Denis believes\ntravel should be made a priority in life, because it broadens one\u2019s horizons.\n\u2018People often feel like they are stuck in some predicament or other, and travel\nis like an antidote.
