<\/p>

This year marks the fifth anniversary of My\nUM, which has grown from an obscure publication to one widely read by UM\nmembers. What reforms have been made along the way to make this happen? What do\nUM members think of My UM?<\/p>\n\n

My\nUM Brings UM Members Closer <\/b><\/p>\n\n

Steven Xie, a sophomore from the Faculty of\nBusiness Administration and a loyal reader of My UM, says he often sees\nstudents distributing the monthly newspaper in the corridor of the Central\nTeaching Building. He thinks My UM helps broaden his horizons and makes him\nfeel closer to his professors, fellow students, and the university. \u2018Sometimes\nI would come across an interesting story in My UM about someone I know, and I\nwould share the story with my friends. It was fun,\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n\n

Ordinary\nPeople\u2019s Extraordinary Stories <\/b><\/p>\n\n

My UM\u2019s target readers are UM members, and\nits aim is clear\u2014to foster a sense of belonging to the university among UM\nmembers. Communications Office (CO) Director Katrina Cheong, a veteran media\npractitioner and the newspaper\u2019s chief editor, knows that interesting,\nlittle-known stories are the key to attracting readers\u2019 interest. \u2018Not only are\nthese stories attention-grabbing, but they allow you to really know more about\nthe people you work or study with. We once published a story about a cleaner\nAuntie Sao, who worked very hard and made a lot of sacrifices to support her daughter\u2019s\nstudies abroad. Many people told us they were deeply touched by the story and\nlearned a lot from Auntie Sao,\u2019 she says. \u2018We also had a story about a professor\nfrom the Department of Communication named Chen Huailin, who loves going on\nsafaris in Africa and taking pictures of wildlife to spread the message about\nprotecting animals and the nature.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

My\nUM\u2019s Two Major Reforms <\/b><\/p>\n\n

When My UM was first launched in 2011, CO\ncolleagues were responsible for all the interview and editing work. In 2012, UM\nReporters, recruited under the UM Reporter Programme, began to help with\ninterview-related work. CO colleague Ella Cheong took over as the newspaper\u2019s\nexecutive editor last year. \u2018Before the relocation, we had a \u201cNew Campus\nUpdates\u201d column, which updated UM members on the progress of new campus\nconstruction,\u2019 says Ella Cheong. \u2018I was responsible for this column, and the\nmost time-consuming aspect of this column was data collection and checking, and\nit was not unusual to revise an article a dozen times.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

My UM has undergone two major reforms,\nfirst in June 2012, when the original colourful design was replaced with a\nsubtle-tone design more suited to a newspaper, and then in January 2015, when\nthe pages were increased from four to eight. Last August, an electronic version\nwas created, with daily updates. \u2018The revamped My UM is more comprehensive and\nmore in-depth. I\u2019m really grateful for the support of all UM members, without\nwhich we wouldn\u2019t have been able to celebrate the fifth birthday of My UM,\u2019\nsays Ella Cheong.<\/p>\n\n

Looking\nto the Future <\/b><\/p>\n\n

In addition to internal circulation, My UM\nis also distributed in local secondary schools and libraries. Katrina Cheong\nhopes the newspaper will attract more readers and become more popular in the\nfuture. \u2018I hope future UM students will proudly say, \u201cI\u2019ve read My UM in middle\nschool.\u201d \u2019 she says.<\/p><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
