But like it or not, sometimes things just don\u2019t work out and\nrelationship breakups are a fact of life. And whether you are the heart breaker\nor the heart-broken, ending a relationship is never easy. So if you are unlucky\nenough to experience a breakup, how should you get over it? More importantly,\nwhat are the do\u2019s and don\u2019ts when you are in a relationship?<\/p>\n\n<p><b>Time Heals\nthe Wound Left by a Breakup<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Michael Lo, a second-year student from the Faculty of Social\nSciences (FSS), have experienced two breakups, with the most recent and\ndifficult one happening about six months ago. He still liked his former\ngirlfriend when they broke up because of personality clashes, so in the early\ndays after the breakup, he naturally felt a little depressed, but understanding\nthat life must go on, he gradually came to terms with the breakup. \u2018Every breakup\nleaves a wound, but time heals everything,\u2019 he says. \u2018I\u2019ve learned to let go of\nthe past and I\u2019m ready to start a new relationship when the right one comes along.\u2019\nAsked what he wants to say to his ex-girlfriend, he says, \u2018Eat well. Sleep\nwell. Smile often.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n<p>Kenneth Lao, a third-year student from the FSS, had his most\nrecent breakup about a year ago. He was the one who made the decision to break\nup with the other person because he could no longer put up with the girl\u2019s petulance\nand wilfulness. \u2018Everything had to be done her way, and eventually I just got\ntired, so I broke up with her,\u2019 he explains. This breakup has changed the way\nhe looks at romantic relationships. \u2018Now I feel that being in a relationship is\nnot as wonderful as I imagined it would be,\u2019 he says. \u2018It\u2019s just a waste of\ntime and money.\u2019 In the first couple of weeks after the breakup, Lao could\nhardly drag himself to the classroom, moping around all day and drowning his\nsorrows in sad songs in karaoke with his friends. Even now he is still not interested\nin starting a new relationship.<\/p>\n\n<p><b>Expert\nAdvice on How to Love with Both Your Heart and Your Head<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Dr Chen Weiwen from the Faculty of Education is a\nrelationship expert. She advises young people to be prepared for the\npossibility of a breakup before entering a romantic relationship. As unromantic\nas this may sound to any starry-eyed lovebirds, Dr Chen has good reason to make\nthis suggestion. \u2018Many people enter a relationship thinking the other person\nwill be their lifelong partner. But it\u2019s wrong to think this way. That person\nis just one of the many possibilities, and we should learn to take breakups in\nour stride,\u2019 she says. Dr Chen suggests that having fun with friends, or even going\non a self-imposed exile, as long as it\u2019s done within reasonable limits, is an\nacceptable way to divert attention away from the breakup, adding that a person should\nseek help from family, friends or professionals, such as the student counselling\nstaff on campus, if he or she experiences wild mood swings, has persistent negative\nthoughts, or exhibits disturbing behaviours after a breakup.<\/p>\n\n<p>Dr Chen also suggests that you should seek opportunities to\ntalk to the other person about related topics while the relationship is still\ngoing well so you can understand each other\u2019s thoughts on the subject and avoid\nan ugly breakup if things don\u2019t work out in the future. Above all, she stresses\nthe importance of not losing yourself in a relationship. \u2018Even when you are in a\nrelationship, you should still have your space, hobbies, friends, and whatever\nelse that makes you feel happy and fulfilled, because this way not only can you\nbring your most confident self to the table, but you will also be able to\nquickly rebuild your life in case of a breakup.\u2019<\/p><p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: My UM No one goes into a romantic relationship expecting it to end some day.
