If you ask Huber Hu, a first-year student from the\nDepartment of Electromechanical Engineering, about the one thing he absolutely cannot\nstand in life, he would most certainly answer , \u2018Boredom.\u2019\nHis hobbies seem to bear this out, because they are anything but boring. Flying\nan airplane, hunting, skydiving, fencing, yachting, keeping a pet eagle\u2026You\nname it, he\u2019s probably tried it. But indulging in exciting hobbies is not the\nonly way Huber keeps boredom at bay. Now barely 20, he has already invented\nseveral award-winning gadgets and is an executive director of an innovative\ntechnology company in Beijing. <\/p>\n\n

 <\/b><\/p>\n\n

Studying in the US\u2014A\nBeautiful Accident<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Huber\u2019s parents are both doctors. They laid out a clear\ncareer path for their son to follow: Huber would finish high school and then\napply for a medical school. But in his second year in high school, Huber made a\ndecision everyone thought was crazy , which he now jokingly says was probably\nbecause he had\u2018lost his mind\u2019. He decided to withdraw from the school\ndespite his parents\u2019 strong opposition and applied to the Florida Institute of\nTechnology (FIT) in the United States. FIT granted him special admission, thus\ninitiating a fruitful period for Huber during which time he carried out research\nprojects under the guidance of his professor.<\/p>\n\n

Huber discovered his interest in science at an early age. In\n2013, when he was still in high school, he and a friend participated in\nEurekaFest, a multi-day event organised by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\n(MIT) for inventors from around the world. They won an outstanding design award\nfor their project, and it was around that time that Huber developed a pulse jet\nengine, an invention of which he feels the most proud to this day. If studying\nin the US was an accident, it proved to be a beautiful one that introduced\nHuber to many exciting new hobbies. For instance, he obtained a private pilot license\nwhile studying in the US. For someone who detests boredom, the reason why he\napplied for the license was boringly practical. \u2018The hourly pay was 300 US\ndollars, with double pay during public holidays, and I figured it was a much\nquicker way to make money and work my way through college than washing the\ndishes in the restaurants,\u2019 he says. In addition to flying a plane, he also\ndabbled in hunting for a while, which supplemented his income and satisfied his\ncuriosity about hunting. His experiences in the US have changed his outlook on\nlife. \u2018I\u2019m now philosophical about pretty much\neverything and no longer sweat the small stuff,\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/b><\/p>\n\n

Enthusiastic Inventor\nand Rookie Entrepreneur<\/b><\/p>\n\n

After studying one year in the US, Huber transferred to UM\nin 2015. At that time he already had an innovative technology company in\nBeijing, whose products range from air purifiers to skateboards using jet\nengines and suspension technology. He has also successfully obtained a room in\nChao Kuang Piu College to serve as his personal laboratory, where he invents\neverything that strikes his fancy, from unmanned planes to railguns. \u2018At\nits core, inventing is about following up on seemingly ridiculous ideas by\nseeking technical support and working you’re your team,\u2019 he\nsays. \u2018Personally I think inventions that can help people in\npractical ways are the ones worth working on.\u2019 Of course he has had his\nfair share of challenges in the process of starting a company , and the\ngreatest one has been the difficulty in earning the trust of prospective\nclients. \u2018Many people just don\u2019t feel that they can trust a \u201ckid\u201d who hasn\u2019 t even finished college to do their projects, so\nit is important to earn their trust,\u2019 Huber explains. \u2018Also,\nmanaging a company from a distance increases my workload. For example, I often\nhave to apply for leave of absence so I can fly back to Beijing for a meeting.\u2019\nThe next goal he hopes to achieve for his company is to attract more investors\nand grow the company so he could develop products he has always wanted to\ndevelop.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/b><\/p>\n\n

The Sorrows of Young\nHuber<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Huber pays for the college tuition and all the other expenses\nwith the money he makes himself. \u2018I think it\u2019s\nbetter to save up the money my parents gave me for college, because this way I\nwon\u2019 t feel guilty.\u2019 But the absence of guilt comes at the price of financial pressure,\nsince he has borrowed money from the bank to fund his company . But the\noptimistic Huber believes that stress can also become a source of motivation. \u2018And\nbesides it\u2019s a road I chose,\u2019 he says. Although Huber loves the\nthrill of inventing new things that have earned him recognition and awards, he\nsometimes doubts whether it is worth spending so much time on this pursuit. \u2018I\nfeel that I have very little in common with other people in terms of interests\nand hobbies, so sometimes I do feel a little lonely,\u2019 he\nsays. In his own words, he is \u201ctoo blunt, too forgetful in daily life,\nand worried about not being able to find a girlfriend.\u201d Huber \u2019s\nexperiences are anything but ordinary for a young man his age, and perhaps\nbecause of this, he is sometimes perceived as a \u2018weirdo\u2019.<\/p>\n\n

But maybe only someone with an extraordinary inner strength\ncan learn to enjoy his own company and persevere in what he believes in. \u2018If\nat first it was just a vague belief that someday I might succeed, now it is a\nfirm belief that one day all my efforts will be rewarded.\u2019 he\nsays. To many young people, college years are carefree time to be enjoyed. From\nthe outside looking in, other people may envy his experiences, but the truth is\nsometimes, especially when he feels tired, Huber wonders if it wouldn\u2019\nt be better to just throw in the towel and join the partying crowd. \u2018During\nmoments like this, it is the belief that my efforts will pay off some day that keeps\nme going,\u2019 he says.<\/p>
