Zhang Mila, a fourth-year student from the Department of Communication,\nis the captain of the UM Fencing Team. At first glance, she doesn\u2019t\nseem to fit the stereotype of a fencer. In fact, having practiced dancing and\npiano since childhood, Zhang never thought she would become an athlete on a\nuniversity team, let alone a sword-wielding one. When she filled out an\napplication form to join the university\u2019s Fencing Team in her first\nyear, she didn\u2019t know she would discover a passion outside the world of\nmusic. As with any endeavour, the beginning is always the hardest. But after\nthree years of training, her efforts paid off. She placed third in the 20th All\nChina University Fencing Championship. The next year, she outdid herself and\nemerged as the first runner-up at the same event.<\/p>

Impressive\nDebut on National Stage<\/b><\/p>

Zhang had never played any sport before she started fencing,\nso she was a little afraid in the beginning that she would never master the\nsport. Luckily, her dancing background proved beneficial to her training in\nfencing. She was also good at imitating others. So she progressed quickly.\nNoticing her potential, the coach encouraged her to spend more time practicing.\nThe first year was especially hard. In addition to training two nights every\nweek, she also fashioned a makeshift target which she used in her spare time to\nimprove the accuracy of her swordplay.<\/p>

When she participated in a national competition in her\nsophomore year, she did not perform well and felt disappointed in herself. The senior\nmembers of the Fencing Team encouraged her not to lose heart, reassuring her\nthat one more year of training would yield better results. Never the quitter,\nZhang stepped up her training by joining a fencing club off campus. The next\nyear came her year of harvest \u2014 she placed\nthird at the 20th All China University Fencing Championship.<\/p>

\u2018I think the good result was partly\ndue to my skills and partly due to luck,\u2019 she says. \u2018I was a\nfearless rookie, blithely unaware of how good the opponents were. And with all\npressure off, I was able to give my best and got a third prize, which was a\npleasant surprise.\u2019 When she participated in the same competition\nagain, however, she no longer had the luxury of competing in a stress-free\nstate, because all eyes were on her. She lost the final with a margin of two\npoints, to a veteran who has been fencing since middle school.<\/p>

Fencing Changes\na Person from the Inside Out<\/b><\/p>

Ever since she started fencing, Zhang has heard her friends comment\non how much the sport has changed her from the inside out. \u2018I\u2019m\nmuch more fit, and my physical coordination is also better. Practicing fencing\nimproves not only my fencing skills, but my skills in other sports as well,\u2019\nshe says.<\/p>

Zhang practices foil fencing, which is the sport\u2019s\nmost complicated form. \u2018You need to stay calm in a\ncompetition, analyse the tactics used by your opponent, and come up with your\nown tactics to beat  your opponent. This\nis the most fun part of fencing,\u2019 she says. \u2018I\u2019ve\nbeen practicing fencing for four years, and I never get tired of it. Just the\nthought of practicing it makes me happy.\u2019<\/p>

 \u2018It is a sport I will\npractice for life.\u2019<\/b><\/p>

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZhang will graduate this year, and she plans to\npursue further studies after graduation. \u2018The greatest gain from my four years at UM is\nthat I\u2019ve developed a strong interest in fencing,\u2019 she says. \u2018I won\u2019t stop practicing it after graduation. It is a\nsport I will practice for life.\u2019<\/p>
