\u2018Somewhere over\nthe rainbow, I believe you can find it, and then share this journey with me\u2026\u2019\nThis is a song called \u2018Friend of the Stars\u2019, written and sung by Rachel Lao, a\nfourth-year student from the Department of Accounting and Information Management.\nThis song won the My Favorite Song Award at a local original music competition\nheld earlier.<\/p>\n\n

\u2018I wrote this song\nto encourage people with autism,\u2019 says Lao. \u2018I went to the library to look for\nbooks on autism, hoping to find some inspiration for the song.\u2019 Lao admits that\nshe rarely has the chance to meet autistic people, but in the process of\nwriting the song, she realised that people with autism are actually not much\ndifferent from ordinary people; they are just not very good at verbalising\ntheir feelings. \u2018Best Buddies Macau Association, which is the or ganisation that\ninvited me to write the song, has a best buddies programme. This programme\npairs each volunteer with a person with autism. The volunteers take care of\ntheir autistic partners and keep them company for a year as a friend. But what\nusually happens at the end of the one-year programme is that the volunteers and\ntheir autistic friends have established such a deep bond that many of them\nbecome lifelong friends,\u2019 says Lao. This touches her deeply. She feels the\nreliable companionship provided by the volunteers to their autistic friends is\nlike the light of stars shining on the faces of innocent children, so she wrote\nthis insight into the song.<\/p>\n\n

Lao never forces\nherself to write songs. She likes to draw inspiration from the little moments\nof everyday life and has the habit of writing in the journal every day. \u2018The\nmelody of the song came to me while I was riding on a bus, and despite being\nsurrounded by lots of people, I took out my cell phone and recorded the melody\nright then and there,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n\n

 Lao has loved singing since childhood. In her sophomore\nyear in college, she started to teach herself to play the guitar because of the\ninfluence of her musician friends. In her third year at UM, she participated in\na campus singing competition for the first time and emerged as the second\nrunner -up. It was through the \u2018Good Voice\u2019 Singing Competition, an event\norganised by the Rotaract Club of Macau, that more people heard her voice. \u2018W\ninning a prize was certainly encouraging and boosted my confidence in singing,\u2019\nshe says. With a girl-next-door image, this rookie singer-songwriter has\naccumulated quite a legion of loyal fans over the past year . She believes\nsocial media has made it easier for talented musicians to attract attention and\nfor Macao-produced original music to reach a Lar ger audience.<\/p>\n\n

\u2018Friend of the\nStars\u2019 is not the only song she has created. She also routinely sings songs and\nwrites music for videos on the social media \u2018Manner \u2019. \u2018520\u2019, a song on Manner\nadapted from \u2018A Little Happiness\u2019, which she sang with another singer , earlier\nwent viral on the internet and made more people know her. With the support of\nher friends, she has opened a fan page on Facebook. She has often performed on\ncampus as a member of \u2018Bom dia\u2019, a student band from the Henry Fok Pearl\nJubilee College.<\/p>\n\n

In addition to\nsinging, Lao has also served as the emcee at various events on campus. \u2018UM\ngives me a lot of room to showcase my musical talents and boosted my confidence\non stage. The experience gained from playing music on campus and the positive\nfeedback from my fellow students have made me more determined that even after\ngraduation I will not give up music,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n\n
