<\/i><\/p>

Mastering a foreign language is not easy.\nLearning how to translate between two languages is even more difficult.\nTraining high-quality translators who can competently perform their role as\ncultural mediators is harder still. The University of Macau\u2019s Departments of\nEnglish and Portuguese are committed to achieving just that through their\nwell-designed master\u2019s degree programmes in translation studies.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Nurturing\nHigh-calibre Translators and Interpreters <\/b><\/p>\n\n

The master\u2019s degree programmes in\ntranslation studies, offered by Faculty of Arts and Humanities, were founded in\n2007. The programmes cover two pairs of languages, Chinese and English, and\nChinese and Portuguese. Every year, the two programmes collectively admit 40\nstudents, half of whom are from Macao. Since the founding of the programmes,\nthe two departments have produced many high-calibre translators and\ninterpreters for Macao and for other areas of Greater China.<\/p>\n\n

\u2018These are two-year programmes. What makes\nthem so unique is that they combine theories and practice and cover two pairs\nof working languages. \u2019 says Prof Zhang Meifang, coordinator and co-founder of\nthe programmes. \u2018So they attract many local applicants as well as non-locals.\nMost of the local applicants work in governmental institutions, and translation\nis often part of their job.\u2019 After two years of training, the students will be\nable to gain a better understanding of the working languages they use and the\ncultures of Chinese-, English- or Portuguese-speaking countries. They will also\nbe more skilful at using the various translation strategies and technologies to\ndeal with translation problems in their day-to-day work. Their independent\nthinking, analytical, and creative skills will improve as well. \u2018You could say\nthat we are training a new generation of translators and interpreters for the\nmarket,\u2019 says Prof Zhang.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Better\nFacilities and Opportunities <\/b><\/p>\n\n

Both programmes contain four compulsory\ncourses, namely Comparative Language Studies for Translation, Theoretical\nConcepts of Translation Studies, Research Design and Writing, and Translation\nTechnology. In addition to these compulsory courses, students can choose from a\nvariety of elective courses, such as Interpreting, Audiovisual Translation,\nTranslating for the Media, Translation for Administration and Commerce, and\nLiterary Translation.<\/p>\n\n

Translation and interpreting courses\noffered by the two departments are becoming increasingly popular with students,\ndriven by growing demand for professional translators and interpreters to cope\nwith the influx of international visitors, conferences, and exhibitions. Dr\nVictoria Lei from the English department is one of the faculty members that\nteach interpreting courses. A well-known Chinese\/English interpreter in Macao,\nDr Lei has worked for various press conferences and other important events of\nthe Macao SAR government, including interpreting for the SAR government during\nPresident Xi Jinping\u2019s visit to Macao in 2014. In Dr Lei\u2019s experience, it\nusually takes four to six years of on-the-job training for a master\u2019s degree\ngraduate to become a good interpreter. Luckily, increased resources and\nimproved training methods have shortened the training period.<\/p>\n\n

Another selling point of the programme is\nthe compulsory course in translation technology, taught by Dr Hari Venkatasen,\nanother experienced interpreter and language expert, who also teaches\ninterpreting classes to master\u2019s students. The course in translation technology\nintroduces students to the MT (Machine Translation) system and the TM\n(Translation Memory) system. It also teaches students how to use the internet\nand SDL Trados, a computer-assisted translation software suite, to improve the\nquality and speed of translation. In order to create a better environment for\nstudents to practice interpreting, after relocating to the new campus, the\nuniversity established an interpreting training lab. \u2018In addition to the\nimproved facilities, the various conferences and lectures held on the campus\noften require simultaneous interpreting between the Chinese and English\nlanguages, which provides excellent opportunities for students to practice\ntheir interpreting skills,\u2019 says Prof Zhang. \u2018Our two interpreting instructors\nalso provide many opportunities for students to practice off the campus.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Intensive\nInterpreting Training <\/b><\/p>\n\n

Dr Lei believes that UM students can hold their\nown when competing with their counterparts from mainland China, Hong Kong,\nTaiwan, and Macao, as evidenced by the good results at the Fifth All China\nInterpreting Contest. The All China Interpreting Contest is the most\ninfluential interpreting competition in China. It is also a competition at the\nhighest level that attracts significant attention from both veteran and\nup-and-coming interpreters. This year, 1,814 students from 439 higher education\ninstitutions in China participated in the competition. Yang Shanshan, a\ndoctoral student of linguistics from the English department, won the\nchampionship in the group category of consecutive interpreting, as the leader\nof a team of students from Hong Kong and Macao. She also received an Excellence\nAward. Zhang Xiaoping, a master\u2019s student of translation studies from the same\ndepartment, won a second prize in the simultaneous interpreting section of the\ncompetition. Their instructor Dr Lei received a Distinguished Teacher Award.<\/p>\n\n

To prepare for this national competition,\nZhang Xiaoping went through intensive training for several months. \u2018Sometimes I\nfelt like I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown,\u2019 she says. \u2018But the only\nway to get better in interpreting is to identify your mistakes and correct\nthem. The intensive training goes a long way towards helping me grow as an\ninterpreter.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

In fact, students from the MA in\nTranslation Studies programme have won many other prizes at national, regional,\nand cross-strait interpreting competitions. For example, Stacey Qiao Liangyu\nwon a second prize at the All China Interpreting Contest 2012; Anita Chao and\nZhang Xiaoping won a third prize at the Sixth Cross-Strait Interpreting\nContest; Ted Qian Qiao won the first prize at the 13th Macao-wide English\nSpeech Contest and the 20th \u201821st Century Cup\u2019 National English Speaking\nCompetition Macao Regional Contest. <\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Advantages\nof the Programmes <\/b><\/p>\n\n

In late 2014, the Faculty of Arts and\nHumanities established the Centre for Studies of Translation, Interpreting, and\nCognition, in order to better understand the cognitive process of translation\nso that teaching methods can be improved scientifically. Prof Li Defeng,\nformerly a professor of translation studies at the University of London and\ncurrently a professor in the English department at UM, was appointed the\ndirector of the centre. One of main the tasks of the centre is to explore how\nthe brain of a translator\/interpreter works in the process of translating\/\ninterpreting. Prof Li hopes that by understanding the different cognitive processes\nof different translators\/interpreters, tailor-made training methods can be\ndeveloped to achieve optimum outcomes. \u2018For example, when an interpreter hears\nthe name of the University of Macau in Chinese, they could translate it into\n\u201cthe University of Macau\u201d, \u201cMacao University\u201d, or \u201cAomen University\u201d. We want\nto know how the brain makes that split-second decision,\u2019 explains Prof Li.<\/p>\n\n

Having worked at the Chinese University of\nHong Kong, Nanjing Normal University, Shandong University, and the University of\nLondon, as a professor and researcher in translation studies for many years,\nProf Li notes that the translation courses offered by UM have three distinctive\ncharacteristics. \u2018First, our courses are designed to meet market demand and to\nsupport the economic growth of Macao,\u2019 he says. \u2018Secondly, our courses give\nstudents both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. And thirdly, we\nuse the insight gained from scientific research to improve our teaching\nmethods.\u2019 Another advantage of the courses is that the instructors possess a\nwealth of practical experience, which allows them to pass on critical skills,\nsuch as how to think on one\u2019s feet when doing\ninterpreting, to the students.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Abundant\nResources <\/b><\/p>\n\n

In its pursuit to become a world tourism\nand leisure hub and a business service hub between China and\nPortuguese-speaking countries, a goal that has been included in the Chinese\ngovernment\u2019s 12th Five-Year Plan, the city is hungrier than ever for\nhigh-calibre translators and interpreters who are proficient in both Chinese\nand Portuguese. \u2018Macao has a very good language learning environment,\u2019 says\nProf Yao Jingming, who assumed office as the head of the Department of\nPortuguese in September 2016. \u2018There are a lot of Portuguese people, TV and\nradio programmes, and newspapers here. Our courses will make good use of these\nresources.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

The bachelor\u2019s degree programme currently\noffered by the Portuguese department aims to give students a grounding in the\nPortuguese language, while the master\u2019s degree programme introduces students to\ntranslation theories and practical skills. Jovita Li, a master\u2019s student from\nthe Portuguese department, has enjoyed learning foreign languages since her\nchildhood. She studied Portuguese for two years in middle school. After she went\nto college in Taiwan, she majored in English. But every summer holiday, she\nwould return to Macao to polish her Portuguese. She has participated in the\nPortuguese summer course offered by UM and a Portuguese summer camp organised\nby the Tertiary Education Services Office of the Macao SAR. Apart from her\nstrong interest in language, another reason she chose to study\nChinese\/Portuguese translation studies at UM is because she is confident about\nthe future of Macao and foresees great demand for translators and interpreters.\n\u2018Both the government and the legal sector need a large number of translators\nand interpreters,\u2019 she says. \u2019The language skills also help my current job in\nthe hospitality industry, where I need to promote Macao and its culture to\nvisitors from around the world.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

The former deputy director of the Cultural\nAffairs Bureau and a prolific poetry writer and translator, Prof Yao Jinming\nstresses the importance of cross-cultural literacy in learning the Portuguese\nlanguage and translation skills. \u2018Language is the carrier of culture. If you\nknow nothing about the culture, then you are merely scratching the surface of\nthe language,\u2019 he says. For this reason, earlier this year, the Portuguese\ndepartment selected five first-year students for a one-year exchange programme\nat Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). The department hopes that BFSU\u2019s\nexperience in training language professionals and the healthy competition with\nthe local students will broaden the students\u2019 horizons. Prof Yao also notes that\nin view of the growing importance of training competent translators for\nsociety, the Portuguese department will study how to improve the current\ntranslation courses.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Passing\nDown Knowledge to the Next Generation <\/b><\/p>\n\n

The government\u2019s plan to develop Macao into\na business service hub between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and the\nincreasing economic collaboration between mainland China and Lusophone\ncountries, combine to promise rosy employment prospects for graduates who are\nproficient in Chinese and Portuguese. \u2018I hope our students set high standards\nfor themselves, and take advantage of the good language learning environment in\nMacao to improve their Portuguese skills,\u2019 says Prof Yao.<\/p>\n\n

His feelings are echoed by Prof Zhang\nMeifang from the English department, who also foresees growing demand for\nprofessional translators and interpreters in the future, both in Macao and in\nthe rest of Greater China. \u2018In the past, China mainly focused on translating\nforeign literature or books in the field of social sciences, from foreign\nlanguages into Chinese, with the hope of learning from the West. But now with\nChina becoming the second largest economy in the world, China wants to tell its\nown story to the outside world by translating its history and culture into\nforeign languages,\u2019 she says. \u2018So there is a great gap between demand and\nsupply.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

This is a gap students like Zhang Xiaoping\nare determined to fill. Inspired by Dr Victoria Lei\u2019s example, Zhang Xiaoping\nhas made up her mind to become a good interpreter and an interpreting\ninstructor. \u2018Dr Lei once told us, when the right time comes, we must remember\nto pass down our experience and knowledge to the next generation, and I think\nthis is the most meaningful contribution an interpreter can make,\u2019 she says.<\/p>
