Nano-products not only create enormous economic benefits and improve\npeople\u2019s quality of life, but have also generated widespread interest in the\nfascinating nanoscale world. Prof Tang Zikang, a world-renowned expert in the\nfield of nano-optoelectronic materials, joined the University of Macau in\nJanuary 2016, as the director of the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials\nEngineering (IAPME). \u2018The institute provides a platform for cutting-edge\napplied research,\u2019 says Prof Tang. \u2018There are many outstanding scientists from\nMacao who are now scattered all over the world, and I hope we can attract these\npeople so that the world may gain a new understanding of Macao.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><b>Starting From Scratch\n<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Since he became the director of the IAPME, Prof Tang has\nbeen personally involved in every aspect of the unit, from preparing to\nestablish a laboratory, to purchasing equipment, to recruiting international\nscholars. \u2018We\u2019ve encountered many unforeseen difficulties in the process,\u2019 he\nsays. \u2018Many of the university rules and regulations were created in the 1980s, and\nthey are clearly outdated in the face of rapidly advancing science and\ntechnology. As a result, many things are progressing very slowly.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The institute\u2019s laboratory is currently under construction.\nOur interview took place in a laboratory in the Research Building N23. \u2018These\nare all state-of-the-art devices,\u2019 says Prof Tang. \u2018Take this focused ion beam\n(FIB) system for example. It is very powerful. Not only can it serve as a\nscanning electron microscope to perform atomic-scale ablation and deposition of\nmaterials; it can also conduct real-time analysis of the elements of\nmaterials.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof Tang recruits staff with different academic\nbackgrounds, in an effort to inspire more innovative research. Currently there\nare more than ten teaching and research staff at IAPME, from different\ncountries and regions, including the United States, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong\nand mainland China.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><b>Fearless Rookie <\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Prof Tang has had a strong interest in physics since he was\na child. After graduating from college, Prof Tang went on to pursue further\nstudies, first at the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and\nPhysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and later at Tohoku University in Japan.\nIn 1992, he received a doctoral degree from Tohoku University. In 1994, the\nDepartment of Physics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology\n(HKUST) began to recruit faculty members from abroad, and Tang joined the\ninstitution. Over the past 21 years at HKUST, he mainly focused on\nnanotechnology research. <\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In Prof Tang\u2019s college days, a popular piece of advice for\nstudents said, \u2018Learn mathematics, physics, and chemistry well, and you will\nnever have to worry about finding a good job no matter where you go.\u2019 Indeed,\nmany of Tang\u2019s contemporaries were drawn to subjects like maths and physics\nbecause of practical considerations of career prospects. But Prof Tang chose to\nstudy physics purely out of a genuine interest. \u2018When I was a child, I felt an\ninnate sense of curiosity about the various natural phenomena,\u2019 he says. \u2018Why\nis coal black? Why is the snow white? And why is the sky blue? I would wonder\nabout these questions.\u2019 After graduating from college, he had the opportunity\nto study the properties and functions of materials. He discovered that\nnano-scale materials sometimes have radically different properties compared to\nthe same materials at bulk scale; sometimes completely new functions emerge at\nnano-scale. This phenomenon begs the question: How can these new properties and\nfunctions that emerge at nano-scale be applied to develop new devices?<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In 1998, Prof Tang attended the annual meeting of the\nAmerican Physical Society and presented a paper on his newly developed carbon\nnanotubes. \u2018The chair of the meeting and those in the audience were all leading\nauthorities on carbon nanotubes,\u2019 he recalls. \u2018The smallest single-walled\ncarbon nanotubes (SWNT) at the time had a diameter of 0.7 nanometers, and the\ngeneral consensus in the scientific community was that it was impossible to\ndevelop SWNTs with a diameter smaller than that. But we announced that our\nSWNTs had a diameter of only 0.5 nanometers [which later measurement showed to\nbe only 0.4nm]. While I was still giving my presentation at the podium, I heard\nvoices of doubts rippling through the audience. People were saying, producing\nan SWNT with a diameter of less than 0.7nm was impossible. I felt very\nembarrassed, but I had to bite the bullet and finish my presentation.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof Tang used to have a picture of Albert Einstein hanging\non the wall of his office at HKUST. In the face of doubts, he would use\nEinstein\u2019s example to motivate himself. \u2018Einstein is my hero,\u2019 he says. \u2018When\nhe first published his theory of relativity, few people could appreciate its\nprofound beauty, but later the theory was experimentally verified.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><b>Discovering\nEpoch-making New Material <\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>In 2000, Prof Tang successfully developed the world\u2019s\nsmallest SWNTs with a diameter of 0.4nm, and observed novel one-dimensional\nsuperconductivity in these ultra-small SWNTs, causing a stir in the global\nscientific community. His discovery was hailed as one of the 11 most important\nachievements in physics in 2001. <\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>As a veteran expert on materials research, Prof Tang\nconsiders physics to be the foundation of all sciences. \u2018Almost all the\nmaterials and devices you see today have to do with physics,\u2019 he says. \u2018For\nexample, the transistors in the chips in the TV sets, mobile phones and\ncomputers are a typical application of semiconductor nanomaterials. Unlike\nengineers and technicians, scientists focus more on making new discoveries and\ndeveloping new materials. But sometimes, because of technological constraints,\nnew discoveries cannot be converted to practical applications right away.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof Tang cites the physical phenomenon known as \u2018quantum\nentanglement\u2019 as an example. Quantum entanglement was discovered in the 1930s.\nFor half a century after its discovery, scientists struggled to find practical\napplications. It wasn\u2019t until recent years, when new breakthroughs were\nachieved in nano-machining technology, that research on quantum entanglement\nwas finally able to progress significantly. Now quantum entanglement has found\napplications in various fields, including quantum computing, secure quantum\ncommunication, and even biological information transfer. \u2018Scientific research\nis important because the results of scientific research can change our way of\nlife and make our lives easier, but what\u2019s equally important is that a\nscientific mindset can change people\u2019s way of thinking, which in turn helps to\nimprove the scientific literacy of the citizens,\u2019 says Prof Tang.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof Tang\u2019s research interests cover a wide range of areas of\nphysics. In addition to the world\u2019s smallest SWNTs, his research on zinc oxide\nhas also attracted considerable attention worldwide. In 1998, Prof Tang\ndiscovered room-temperature ultraviolet laser emission from self-assembled zinc\noxide (ZnO) microcrystallite thin films. The subsequent paper he published on\nthe subject immediately generated significant interest from scientists around\nthe world. The groundbreaking discovery not only ignited a worldwide interest\nin ZnO research, but also opened up a wide range of potential applications for\nZnO semiconductors in UV laser diodes. The pioneering paper he published in\n1998 in the Applied Physics Letters of the American Institute of Physics, has\nbeen cited more than 2,100 times. In 2012, the same paper was listed as one of\nthe 50 most cited papers over the past 50 years in Applied Physics Letters .<\/p><p><br\/><\/p>\n\n<p><b>Prioritising Research\non Applied Materials <\/b><\/p>\n\nThe IAPME will prioritise applied research that\nis of direct relevance to Macao residents, such as research on new energies and\nnew materials. \u2018This way we can create some positive effects on society,\u2019 he\nsays. \u2018We will also conduct basic research once we have attained satisfactory\nresults in applied research.\u2019<\/div><div><br\/><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source:&nbsp;umagazineNanotechnology is being used more and more in everyday products.
