His\nworks mainly deal with interesting but oeat subjects such as artificial light\nsources, which he says are inspired by his education in sociology and anthropology.\nAbout a year ago, tired of his nine-to-five lifestyle, he quit his job and\nbecame a full-time artist. Asked what prompted him to make that decision, he\nsays, \u2018I knew the road ahead was not going to be easy, but I just wanted to do\nwhat I was passionate about while I was still young.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p><br\/>\n<b>Rethink Human-Nature Relationship<br\/>\n<br\/>\n<\/b>Tang\u2019s current studio is located in Macao Art Garden, the city\u2019s first\nvenue dedicated to local artistic creation and exhibition. So far nearly 50\nartists have established studios there, and Tang is one of the few full-time\nartists among them. Tang\u2019s studio is less than 100 square feet, but he says it\ndoes not hinder his creative process, because the entire society actually\nserves as his studio.<br\/>\n<br\/>\nAfter graduation from high school, Tang was admitted to the Department of\nDigital Media Design at Ming Chuan University in Taiwan. But after spending two\nyears in Taiwan, he realised that design was not a career path he wanted to\nfollow. So he returned to Macao to pursue a degree in the Department of\nSociology at UM. The programme in sociology taught him to look at society from\ndifferent perspectives and prompted new ideas about how he might depict society\nwith his camera. \u2018Ever since my college days, I have been raising questions about\nlife, such as what is the relationship between man and society?\u2019 he says.<br\/>\n<br\/>\nOver the past few years, artificial landscapes have been the main subject of\nTang\u2019s works. \u2018Landscapes were created for humans, but if the created space\nfails to interact with humans, I would start to think about the original\nmeaning of space,\u2019 he says. His daily observations led him to the realisation\nthat the urban environment is actually a kind of artificial landscape, and is\nalso the result of man\u2019 acclimatisation to the natural environment. \u2018For\ninstance, photosynthesis normally only occurs during the day. Cities are the\nonly place where photosynthesis also occurs at night. But we should not think\nof light pollution only in terms of its damage. If there were no lights to illuminate\nthe city at night, the various functions of a city would come to a halt,\u2019 he\nsays.<br\/>\n<br\/>\nSociology teaches critical thinking, but it also provides objective knowledge\nabout the persistence of social norms and forms. Many of Tang\u2019s works,\nincluding Acclimation and Line, are visual representation of the theories he\nhas learned in sociology. \u2018&shy;There aren\u2019t many photographers in Macao who focus\non landscapes, so the local audience isn\u2019t very familiar with this subject.\nCurrently the collectors of my works are mostly foreigners.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p><br\/>\n&shy;<b>Think Critically<br\/>\n<br\/>\n<\/b>Tang\u2019s works have a unique style. He attempts to deconstruct people\u2019s\nstereotyped impressions of cities and then reconstruct that impression by\nreconnecting people, community, places, nature, and memory. His works are not\nmerely documentary photographs; they reflect his observations and\ninterpretations of society. Indeed, each work is a field study in sociology.\nApart from Human Scenery, his works are completely devoid of human presence.\nBut there are always clues, such as buildings and artificial light sources,\nthat point to human activity. \u2018Although you can\u2019t find humans in my works, you\nwill discover the interaction between humans and the city through these subtle\nclues,\u2019 he says. \u2018I don\u2019t want to show humans\u2019 impact on the natural\nenvironment in an explicit way. I want the audience to discover on their own\nhow humans affect and interact with nature in the same way a detective pieces\ntogether clues to solve a case. I think it\u2019s more interesting that way.\u2019<br\/>\n<br\/>\nTang is grateful to his professors from the Department of Sociology, especially\nAssociate Professor Peter Zabielskis and Assistant Professor Lu Chia-Wen. \u2018I\nwould often discuss questions with my professors after class, and they would\ncomment on my works and offer very good suggestions,\u2019 he says. \u2018Since my\ncollege days, Peter and I have been discussing the different viewpoints in\nsociology, and he has also taught me many valuable life lessons. These\ndiscussions have inspired my works and made me see life in a different way.<\/p>\n\n<p><br\/>\n<b>Beyond the Casinos<br\/>\n<br\/>\n<\/b>Apart from his background in sociology, his childhood experiences are also\nan important influence on his works. He grew up in a tenement in the Horta e\nCosta District where people enjoyed close relationships with their neighbours.\nBut the fast economic growth in Macao led to a large influx of labourers and a\nrapid expansion of housing estates, which in turn caused such close neighbourly\nrelationships to dissipate. Tang still remembers looking up, as a child, and\nseeing the sky crisscrossed with power lines, a scene he rarely sees now. The\npower lines in his work Line shows the changes in the residential communities\nand the ever-distant relationship between people. \u2018With the constant\nrestructuring in the housing estates, human interaction is becoming more and\nmore a matter of going through the motions. And gradually, coldness becomes the\ndefault way in which people treat each other. I hope my works can help\nforeigners understand that apart from casinos, there are also these kinds of\nbuildings in the old part of the city. More importantly, I want to help people\nunderstand the changes in the Macao society and the cold way in which people\nhabitually interact with each other,\u2019 he says.<br\/>\n<br\/>\nBefore becoming a full-time artist, Tang worked as a part-time artist\u2019s\nassistant in college, during which time he actively participated in art\nexhibitions and competitions both at home and abroad. After graduation, he held\na clerical job for a year, but then decided to quit to become a full-time\nartist. \u2018I only live once. To me, spending eight hours every day in the office\ndoesn\u2019t seem like a sensible way to spend this once-only life,\u2019 he says. He\nencourages students to discover their vocations as early as possible. \u2018Finding\nyour vocation will make you happier.
