Her creamy,\nsilky voice wafts down the hallways of Shiu Pong College. When she sings, Prof\nKatrine Wong, director of UM\u2019s Centre for Teaching and Learning\nEnhancement (CTLE) and associate professor from the Department of English,\nchanges into a different charm from the refined lady I know from her literature\nclass.<\/p>\n\n<p><b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b>Sing like a Fairy<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Music defines Katrine, for it opens\npathways to boundless explorations. Instead of the latest Katy Perry release,\nJustin Bieber\u2019s most popular songs or Lady Gaga, Katrine prefers to\ndive into classical music pieces, most of which were written centuries ago. In\nthe realm of music, myths are immortal, through which she sees each beautiful\nnote telling a story.<\/p>\n\n<p>When she sings a phrase, Katrine would\nfeel as if she is travelling to a particular moment or place where the scene is\nset in a masterpiece. For instance, her favourite piece \u2018P\u00edse\u0148 Rusalky o M\u011bs\u00ed\u010dku\u2019 (Song to the Moon), a romantic aria\nin Rusalka (water spirit from Slavic mythology) \u2013 a fairytale opera by Anton\u00edn Dvo\u0159\u00e1k \u2013 unleashes her imagination so vividly\nthat she\u2019d sing as if she was Rusalka, living in a lake.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018I&#8217;m moved every time I sing this aria; the voice line and\nthe accompaniment work together just so, so beautifully. It gives me\ngoosebumps, in a good way,\u2019 says Katrine. \u2018The narrative is highly poetic, and the character, a\nwater spirit, speaks to the moon about her passion for a mortal being [to become\nhuman to seek love]. I always get excited when I see the moon &#8211; new moon, full\nmoon. I love the moon.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><b>Feed Her Soul with Music<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Despite being busy with routine\nteaching and research, Katrine won\u2019t allow music to fade away from her\nlife. She has performed for notable Leeds University Liturgical Choir, Harvard\nSummer Chorus, Hong Kong Chamber&nbsp;Choir and Diocesan Graduate Singers.\nAs a classically trained pianist and soprano, Katrine provides vocal lessons to\nsingers from Shiu Pong College, the University of Macau Choir, and Macau Perosi\nChoir, every Tuesday evening and Saturday afternoon. She teaches them\ntechniques like posture, placement, resonance and breathing, and inspires them\nto \u2018own\u2019 the song.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u2018Conventionally, music and lyrics work together in a piece\nof vocal music. Very often I take choir members through the overall structure\nof the piece, then we look at various things such as music present in the words\n(or syllables, or consonants and vowels for that matter), meanings of the words,\nthe lilt in the line,\u2019 says Katrine. \u2018Combining textual interpretation and\nmusical finesse is a fulfilling process. For songs in Cantonese or Mandarin,\nthe task becomes a bit more challenging because of the tonal quality and\nlexical structure of the Chinese language.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>As to the sacrifice she has to make\nfor music, Katrine says with a smile, \u2018it\u2019s a bit heavy to say \u201csacrifice\u201d, but it\u2019s true that in recent years I have\nspent most of my Saturday afternoons with Coro Perosi, rather than with my\nfamily. Yet&nbsp;I like seeing them. The Choir draws in\na lot of interesting people. We are from all walks of life. It\u2019s not just the music but also the people that attracts me\nto spend my time with.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><b>Always in a Mood for Melody<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Surprisingly, Katrine did not grow up\nin a family where music was a daily part of her life \u2013 her father was an editor at Oriental Daily News (Hong Kong),\nwhom she seldom saw. They communicated via notes he wrote before leaving for\nhis night shifts. Yet she recalls he had a great voice and often sang and\nwhistled, so she learned from him.<\/p>\n\n<p>The key person who introduced her to\nthe world of singing was the headmistress from her primary school. She still\nremembers how exciting yet nerve-wracking it was when the headmistress picked\nher to perform for a celebration in school together. \u2018The Holy City\u2019 \u2013 a religious Victorian ballad dating from\n1892 \u2013 was the song selected for the performance. \u2018Just imagine! How difficult that piece would be for a\nten-year-old girl, who had learnt piano for only four years! There were octaves\nthat I couldn&#8217;t even manage,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u2018I was enchanted by her [the headmistress\u2019s] voice. She was a great soprano singer. She picked me\nas a pianist to work with her,\u2019 says Katrine. \u2018She was like a friend and encouraged me by saying \u201clet\u2019s make some good music. Let\u2019s pause a little bit here and there. Listen to my\nbreathing, listen for when I need to take a breath,\u201d so that was a very professional yet informal training.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>Katrine holds professional titles of\nFTCL (Solo Piano) and LTCL (Voice Performance) from Trinity College London. When\nshe sings, you would be impressed not only by her powerful vocal dynamics, but\nalso by a wealth of emotions she channels into the notes.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><b>\u2018<\/b><b>Lady Conscience<\/b><b>\u2019<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Katrine loves theatre, but she seldom\nshows off her acting talent, at least not when I was her student years ago.\nYet, fortunately, I watched her show for the first time in the Script Road \u2013 Macau Literary Festival 2017. Her performance was\nstunning.<\/p>\n\n<p>Originally, Katrine was the director\nfor her original allegorical play <i>The Three Ladies of Macao<\/i>. However,\ntwo days before the show, something unexpected happened: the student who played\nLady Conscience \u2013 one of the title roles \u2013 pulled out from the production last\nminute. Either the show had to be canceled, which would disappoint the\naudience, or somebody had to jump in for the role \u2013 eventually Katrine did.<\/p>\n\n<p>It was tough for Katrine to memorise\nall the dialogues on such short notice, not to mention facial expressions, movements\nand gestures. But instead of dwelling on the problem, she tried her best and,\nsurprisingly, played her role in a controlled, dramatic fashion. Perhaps, she\nis very much a Lady Conscience in real life, always kind, for giving and\nthankful \u2013 a perfect embodiment of her life motto \u2013 \u2018Never go to bed angry.\u2019<\/p><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: My UMHer fingers are agile as they dance across the keys, alighting first on ivory then gliding to ebony.
