This year is\nthe Year of the Dog. We interview several dog lovers at UM about their stories\nwith their pets.<\/p>

 <\/p>

Touching Moments with Piggy<\/b><\/p>

Claries from\nthe Department of Communication was born in 1994, which was a Year of the Dog.\nShe has a Poodle named \u2018Chubby Piggy\u2019.<\/p>

Piggy was\nadopted by Claries when it was several months old. Over the past eight years,\nClaries has experienced many touching moments with Piggy. \u2018Several\nyears ago, she went through a sterilisation surgery,\u2019 says Claries. \u2018When the\nsurgery was over, we called out her name from outside the window. She was still\nin pain but she tried her best to respond.\u2019 Piggy doesn\u2019t like to be separated from Claries, so\nshe would sit on top of Claries\u2019s suitcase when Claries tries to pack for a\ntrip.<\/p>

<\/p>

 <\/b><\/p>

Like Owner, Like Dog.<\/b><\/p>

Piggy is a\nneatness freak just like Claries. She quickly learned to poop in a designated\narea, and would refuse to go into the house if Claries forgets to wipe her\nbottom clean after\nshe has finished her business. Piggy has curly hairs, and so does Claries\u2019s mother.\nOne day, Claries\u2019s mother was walking the dog outside when a\nlittle girl on the street said to her mother, \u2018Look! Mom! That lady has the exact\nsame hair as her dog!\u2019<\/p>

 <\/p>

The Arrival of Hope<\/b><\/p>

Lias is a\nfourth-year student from the Department of Sociology. About four years ago, her\nelder brother bought a three-month-old puppy named Hero on the internet and shipped\nit to Macao by air. Now Hero is five years old, with a Chinese name \u2018Arrival of\nHope\u2019. Lias\u2019s brother gave\nthe dog this name because he wanted the puppy to bring hope for the family.<\/p>

Lias believes\nit is important to spend time with the pet. \u2018A dog\u2019s life consists of only one or two\ndecades, but they spend 60 to 70 per cent of their time waiting for their owners,\nwhile we only play with them when we are free,\u2019 says Lias.\nThat is why Lias always walks Hero once or twice a week no matter how busy she\nis.<\/p>

 <\/p>

Tolerance, Caring, and Patience<\/b><\/p>

Laurence is\na third-year student majoring in Japanese studies. He has a Bichon Frise named\nLittle B which he has kept for ten years. His family was initially against him\nkeeping a dog, but eventually grew to like Little B.<\/p>

Laurence\ntreats Little B like a daughter. He would hide the food she is not supposed to\neat, care for her, tolerate her mistakes, and treat her with patience. This year,\nLittle B turned ten years old, which is old age for Bichon Frises. Laurence\nhopes that when the inevitable day comes, Little B won\u2019t suffer.<\/p>

 <\/p>

Barbie Trumps Nasal Allergies<\/b><\/p>

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>

Amy, a staff\nmember from the Honours College, has always wanted to keep a dog since she was\na child, but her mother with nasal allergies was against it. About nine years ago,\nAmy bought a Poodle named Barbie and brought it home as a fait accompli. \u2018I heard that\nPoodles rarely shed, which makes them suitable for people with nasal allergies,\u2019 says Amy. \u2018So I lied to\nmy mother and told her I was taking care of it for a friend, and might return\nit any minute.\u2019 Amy says her mother probably already knew at\nthe time that she bought the puppy but chose not to expose her lie, because she\ninstantly fell in love with the palm-sized Barbie. Amy\u2019s mother dotes on the dog like a granddaughter\nand takes her wherever she goes.<\/p>
