Therefore artificial intelligence will enable\nfundamental changes to society. Professors from the Department of Computer and\nInformation Science of the University of Macau have dedicated an array of\nresearch to artificial intelligence technology. To what extent might their\nresearch endeavours fuel Macao\u2019s quest to create a smart city? Moreover, what\nresources does this department have at its disposal to attract talented students?<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"\">A Cloud Platform for Smart Monitoring of\nFire<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Many\nprofessors on the research team of the Department of Computer and Information\nScience are devoted to the exploration of artificial intelligence (AI). For\ninstance, Prof Tang Yuanyan, as a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and\nElectronics Engineers (IEEE), has been dedicated to AI research for years. His contribution\nin this domain has received many accolations. His major research interests\ninclude mode recognition, a crucial subfield in AI research. He introduced\nentropy theory into mode recognition and established a theoretical framework for\ntextual feature analysis and comprehension. Additionally, he is the first to\npublish an academic monograph on wavelet theory and mode interdisciplinarity in\nboth Chinese and English; he is a wellknown-organiser of international conferences\nand the founder of an international SCI journal focused on wavelet theory and\napplication.<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof\nTang and his team are currently building a cloud platform for smart monitoring\nof fire. He explained to us the details of this platform: \u2018The cloud platform\nfor smart fire control is by essence a centralized monitoring network platform which\nutilises AI technology to collect and monitor images of architecture to identify\npotential risks or dangerous construction material or roadblocks. Upon identification\nof such risks, personnel could be dispatched to investigate onsite and heed the\nmaintenance, so that the fire monitoring and alarm system can be enhanced to\nprevent fires.\u2019 Although this technology is still in its infancy, Prof Tang is\nconfident that the smart control system could perfect the fire monitoring\nsystem, electrical circuits, water supply, and other plans related to\narchitectural design and construction safety, to safeguard people\u2019s lives and\nproperties.<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"\">Video-tracking Law-breaking Vehicles<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>To\ndevelop Macao into a smart city calls for coordination from various sectors,\namong which smart transportation and safer roads are high on the agenda. Prof\nPun Chi Man, head of the Department of Computer and Information Science, has\nbeen exploring image recognition, classification, target tracking and\nrecognition for over a decade. He has published dozens of high-quality papers.\nCurrently, he is working on video tracking which can find wide application in\nreal time vehicle monitoring. According to Prof Pun, \u2018This system could record the\nnumber of cars parked by the roadside and duration of parking. As long as the time\nlimit for violation is pre-set, the system is capable of recording vehicle\nimages, recognizing car plates and notifying the competent judicial\ndepartments. No special hardware, other than a video camera, is required for\nthis system. A patent has been applied for this real-time monitoring\ntechnology.\u2019<\/p>\n\n<p>Besides,\nProf Pun is cooperating with an advertising company to explore the possibility\nof setting up cameras on vending machines, where the bio-features of consumers,\nsuch as gender, age, and number could be detected. Such information could help the\nadvertising company to assess the impact of advertisements, serving as a\nreference to develop more precision-targeted advertising strategies and budget\nplans.<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"\">Collecting Images by Drones<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Prof\nVong Chi Man, associate head of the Department of Computer and Information\nScience, is committed to incorporating AI technology into drone application. By\ncontrolling drones to collect images within the University of Macau campus, AI\ntechnology may be leveraged to analyse and reconstruct the data to build a 3D\nimage, with semantic labels automatically generated for the objects or areas in\nthe 3D sample, such as sky, road, cars, trees, etc. Tis technology is known as\nSemantic 3D Reconstruction.<\/p>\n\n<p>According\nto Prof Vong, \u2018The Semantic 3D Reconstruction technology is vital to unmanned\npiloting technology. The traffic condition and structure could be presented in\nreal time, preceded by the unmanned vehicles\u2019 identification of objects or\nspatial scope, thereby better forecasting whether a human being or an object\nlies ahead. Correspondingly, driving safety could be enhanced.\u2019 He further\nelaborated, \u2018Unmanned vehicles can run on the pre-set route. Take the\nUniversity of Macau for example, if we apply the unmanned piloting technology\nto the campus shuttle bus, the bus can run on a pre-set route and there is no\nneed to worry about hiring drivers anymore. The campus shuttle can also work on\na 24\/7 basis\u2019.<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"\">Image Recognition and Target Tracking\nAlgorithm<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Prof\nZhou Yicong, associate professor of the Department of Computer and Information\nScience, is an expert in multi-media information security, image processing,\nand comprehension. He underlines the immense potential of AI, stating that the\nfuture trend of the world lies in AI research. At present, Prof Zhou is working\non the algorithm for image recognition and target tracking. Image recognition technology\nis applied to identification of individuals at Macao Customs. It is also instrumental\nin locating criminals and determining their whereabouts The Macao SAR\ngovernment is resolute to build Macao into a smart city featuring the concept\nof \u2018digital guiding technology, smart technology serving people\u2019. In a similar\nvein, Prof Zhou believes that this government plan will guide research and\ndevelopment for Macao. \u2018This government agenda has made it imperative to train\na wealth of talents in cloud computing and AI, which, indubitably, would\nprovide Macao with tremendous opportunities to further tap the AI development\u2019.<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof\nZhou is firmly convinced of the enormous potential of AI at the University of\nMacau. \u2018PhD students in our lab have recently published two high-quality papers\nabout image recognition, marking the debut of UM researchers to publish wholly independent\nresearch findings on computer vision and AI in top international conferences. Besides,\nour department has ample postgraduate and PhD applicants in recent years, which\nre\ufb02ects student\u2019s interests and aspiration to explore AI.<\/p>\n\n<p>Alongside\nthe cultivation of postgraduate and PhD students, Prof Zhou has been the\norganizer for the annual Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence Summer Camp\nsince 2012. This programme provides opportunities for middle school students to\ngain access to AI technology and learn about its application via programming\nand parameter designs and applications of computer vision, thereby enhancing their\ninterest in AI development. Many participants of the camp were inspired to\nstudy at UM. For the upcoming summer camp, Prof Zhou plans to combine the\nlatest and most popular virtual reality (VR) and deep learning (DL)technology\ninto the teaching plan, so that middle school students can experience VR and DL\nthemselves and understand the underlying scientific principles .<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"\">Curriculum Reform Attracts Talent in\nComputer Science<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>At\npresent, the Department of Computer and Information Science has successfully\ndelivered 1,088 graduates to the job market, most of whom have taken up\npositions as software engineers in local corporations, officials in government\ndepartments, or teachers in high schools or higher education institutions. Some\nalumni even established tech start-ups. Prof<\/p>\n\n<p>Pun,\nhead of the Department of Computer and Information Science, has coached various\noutstanding and talented students. Among them is a student named Leong Ka Chon\nwho applied computer image processing technology in order to analyse and scan tongue\nmovements which enable the disabled to control a wheelchair or type on a keyboard.\nAlso, upon graduation he founded his own tech start-up.<\/p>\n\nProf Pun said that the smart city plan calls for\nmore technology gurus and computer talents. \u2018AI and data science are among the\nmost popular disciplines, we have taken the initiative to launch curriculum\nreforms to align with this trend. For example, we now o\ufb00er courses on AI both\nat BA and MA levels. In this stage, data science is one of the key courses in\nBA programme. A student has the autonomy to choose data science or AI based on\ntheir own interests.
