Massive\nOpen Online Courses (MOOC) have transformed learning by blurring geographical\nand temporal boundaries of the classroom. Indeed, MOOCs are all the rage, with\nuniversities from around the world scrambling to launch di\ufb00erent courses on this\nnew platform. Last year, the University of Macau (UM) signed a collaboration\nagreement with MOOC-CN Information Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd. This year,\nsome UM courses will become available on Tsinghua University\u2019s online course platform,\nwww.xuetangx.com. Several UM professors have formed teams to prepare for this\nproject. The challenge is designing courses that are attractive, creative, and\ndistinctive. <\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Promoting Signature Courses to the Whole\nCountry<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Lionel\nNi, UM vice rector for academic a\ufb00airs, is a staunch supporter of the university\njoining the MOOC platform. According to him, MOOC is more than online\neducation; it is individualized learning that encourages teachers to be\ncreative in their instruction. In fact, one of the advantages of the MOOC platform\nis that it can cater to students\u2019 individual needs. Teachers can upload course-related\ncontent to MOOC for students to study beforehand. They can then monitor the\nstudents\u2019 progress by checking when the students studied the content and the\namount of time they spent on it, thereby revising the content according to the\nstudents\u2019 progress.<\/p>\n\n

Prof\nNi explains that of all universities in mainland China, Tsinghua University has\ndevoted the most resources to developing MOOCs. In fact, Tsinghua has signed\nagreements with Coursera and edX in the United States, which enables Tsinghua and\nthese two platforms to access each other\u2019s online courses. \u2018What impresses me\nthe most is that there are 200 full-time sta\ufb00 at Tsinghua working hard to\ndevelop various technologies to help teachers innovate their teaching,\u2019 says\nProf Ni.<\/p>\n\n

Officially\nlaunched in 2013, Tsinghua\u2019s online course platform, www.xuetangx.com, is\noperated by MOOC-CN Information Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd. By the end of\nthe year 2016, it had already grown to be the third largest MOOC platform in the\nworld, with over 8.2 million registered learners and more than 1,000 courses\ncollectively subscribed over 10 million times. One of the highlights of\nTsinghua\u2019s MOOC platform is that it uses big data and smart computing, which\nnot only improves teaching and learning outcomes, but also makes possible a\nmode of learning that is cross-discipline, cross-institution, cross-border, and\ncross-age group.<\/p>\n\n

Prof\nNi believes that teaching Portuguese language to people whose native tongue is\nChinese is one of UM\u2019s strengths. Trough Tsinghua\u2019s platform and technologies,\nUM will be able to promote its signature courses to students all over the country\nso that more students can learn Portuguese. Faculty of Arts and Humanities Dean\nProf Hong Gang Jin and Prof Yao Jingming from the Department of Portuguese are already\nin the process of developing MOOCs in English and Portuguese. Prof Ni is\nconfident that these courses will have a greater impact once taught on the MOOC\nplatform.<\/p>\n\n

Prof\nJin is a linguist, whose research interests include second language acquisition,\ncognitive processing of languages, and transfer of learning. Prof Jin is especially\ninterested in integrating technology in the teaching of languages and\nliterature. She is now busy designing a MOOC in second language acquisition.\n\u2018Macao is a multicultural and multilingual society. Language courses are the\nsignature courses of our faculty. So we hope to introduce these courses to more\nstudents through the MOOC platform,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n\n

The\nMOOC in second language acquisition, which was designed by Prof Jin herself, is\nnow in its final stage of production. Prof Jin was named the 1998 CASE National\nOutstanding Baccalaureate College Professor of the Year. She received Hamilton\nCollege\u2019s 1963 Award of Teaching Excellence in 1996. She is also a two-time\nrecipient of the NCOLCTL Walton Lifetime Achievement Award. Aside from being an\naccomplished educator, she also has a wealth of experience in creating online\ncourses. While in the US, she published various audio-video teaching materials.\nAccording to Prof Jin, the distinctive feature of this course lies in language\nacquisition and cognitive processing. \u2018MOOCs di\ufb00er from conventional courses in\nmany ways,\u2019 she says. \u2018They have special requirements for content and format. They\nrequire a di\ufb00erent theme for each class which must be limited to ten minutes,\nand they also call for \ufb02exible teaching methods to stimulate learner interest.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

MOOC Teams<\/b><\/p>\n\n

At\nthe end of 2017, Prof Ni arranged for faculty members interested in launching\nMOOCs to visit Peking University and Tsinghua University to gain hands-on\nexperience. Tsinghua University even organized a workshop for the UM\ndelegation. According to Prof Ni, four faculty members from the Faculty of Education\n(FED), including assistant professors Li Zihao and Hsiang Tien Ping, travelled\nto Beijing to attend the workshop to learn how to use Tsinghua\u2019s online course\nplatform, how to design courses, and how to stimulate student interest through innovative\nteaching methods. Last year, Prof Ni introduced faculty members from FED to\nTsinghua\u2019s MOOC technologies, hoping to motivate them to participate in the MOOC\nproject. But at that time, they didn\u2019t show much interest. Later, Prof Hsiang\nvisited Shanghai to attend a conference on education. A participant at the\nconference mentioned the impact of MOOCs, which made Prof Hsiang realise the necessity\nof keeping pace with the fast-changing world. Upon returning to UM, she\nexpressed her eagerness to join the MOOC team. She is now busy designing a MOOC\nin Hanyu Pinyin.<\/p>\n\n

Last\nyear, Prof Li Zihao won the Silver Award from the International Outstanding\ne-Learning Awards and UM\u2019s first Teaching Excellence Award, in recognition of\nhis innovative teaching methods. One of the general education courses he\nteaches is theatre. In teaching this course, he departs from the traditional\napproach and adopts a \u2018\ufb02ipped classroom\u2019. He combines this student-centred, outcome-based\napproach with the latest technologies in augmented reality, artificial\nintelligence, and zoom, in order to create an interactive learning experience\nfor students. The course has been very well received. When he first o\ufb00ered this\ncourse in 2016, only 20 students enrolled. A year later, the students had to\nbeat a long queue for this elective course.<\/p>\n\n

Prof\nLi\u2019s team is designing a MOOC which aims to bring out the creativity hidden in\nevery student. He has been actively recruiting talented people in order to\ncreate a MOOC team at UM. He invited Katrine Wong, associate professor from the\nDepartment of English and director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning\nEnhancement (CTLE), to be in charge of the part of the course related to\ntheatre and music. Prof Davood Gozli from the Department of Psychology is\ntasked with the job of analysing the patterns and underlying laws of\ncreativity. Prof Li himself is responsible for exploring relationships between\nbody, mind, ideas, and creativity. \u2018The biggest characteristic of this course\nis that it brings together people with di\ufb00erent talents, so we can create\nsomething that\u2019s both fun and practical for learners,\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n\n

The\nMOOC in creativity will be open to students from all over the world, regardless\nof their age. It will cover of-discussed topics directly related to everyday\nlife. One of humanity\u2019s greatest assets in the 21st century is creativity,\nbecause this is one area in which machines can never replace humans. But\nunfortunately, there are very few courses in creativity. The three or four\nMOOCs currently available on this subject mainly deal with business, architecture,\nand music. The course designed by Prof Li\u2019s team, however, is di\ufb00erent. \u2018There\nis something for everyone in this course,\u2019 says Prof Li.<\/p>\n\n

CTLE Providing Technical Support<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Currently,\nthe MOOC team has teachers from each faculty. They meet regularly to share\nthoughts and exchange ideas. The CTLE provides technical support for the MOOC team.\nProf Ni explains: \u2018Each course is di\ufb00erent in terms of course content and\nteaching methods. That is why it is important for teachers from di\ufb00erent faculties\nto share experience and come together to brainstorm ideas. This is the first\ntime we have designed MOOCs, so there will be a lot of cost involved. But it\u2019s\nstill worth doing because the platform can reach an astounding number of\nlearners. We also hope to help students retain what they learn through\nhigh-tech solutions.\u2019 Prof Ni hopes to eventually launch more MOOCs related to\nthe culture and history of Macao and China.<\/p>\n\n

The\nMOOCs developed by the two current teams will be completed and launched within\nthis year. Compared to MOOC teams at other universities, which can have dozens\nor even hundreds of members, UM\u2019s MOOC teams are very small, with only five to\nsix people. But the team leaders refuse to compromise on quality simply because\nof size or constraints in resources and manpower. Indeed, they have been\nmeticulous in preparing every aspect of the projects, from the duration of the\ncourse to presentation skills. Prof Ni is very impressed with the persistence\nof the two teams, saying, \u2018Not only are they willing to rethink and redesign their\nteaching with limited resources; they are also willing to do it during their\nspare time, which is even more admirable. They are our MOOC talent seed or\npioneers. When our first MOOCs become successful, they are bound to attract more\nfaculty members to join our team and grow our MOOC capability.\u2019<\/p>
