To\nmost people, biological ties are for life. But for University of Macau (UM)\nRegistrar and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Yuen Ka\nVeng, so are ties between teachers and students. Education is about one life\ninfluencing other lives. Prof Yuen, for one, has derived much gratification\nfrom watching his students grow and seeing the fruits of his positively\naffecting humanity<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

A life-transforming Teacher<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Yuen\u2018s\nown experience provides a good example of the importance of having a\nlife-changing teacher. He specializes in earthquake engineering, specifically\nin Bayesian inference, uncertainty quantification, system identification,\nstructural health monitoring, reliability analysis, and analysis of dynamical\nsystems. His supervisor was the famous Prof James Beck, who in turn learned at\nthe feet of Paul Jennings, California Institute of Technology’s former provost\nand a student of the legendary George W Housner, the father of earthquake\nengineering. Housner\u2019s life has become part of the folklore of this discipline,\nand he remained an active researcher into his late nineties. When he died, he\nmade a substantial donation to the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute of\nCaltech. Yuen was profoundly inspired by this tireless and sel\ufb02ess scholar.<\/p>\n\n

He\nalso benefited from the timely advice from an unlikely source. In 1998, on the\neve of his graduation from a master\u2019s degree programme at the Hong Kong\nUniversity of Science and Technology, Yuen came knocking on the door of UM\u2019s\nFaculty of Science and Technology for a job. To his surprise, the dean of the\nfaculty, Prof Iu Vai Pan, gave him an unpalatable piece of advice: \u2018This is a\ncritical moment in your life. You should consider finishing your PhD studies\nbefore you take up an academic post.\u2019 Yuen, who was always a straight-A\nstudent, was not accustomed to getting \u2018no\u2019 for an answer, and he left somewhat\nde\ufb02ated. But he decided to heed the dean\u2019s wise counsel and headed to the US\nfor his doctoral studies.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/b><\/p>\n\n

Research that Made His Peers Sit Up and\nPay Attention<\/b><\/p>\n\n

During\nhis study at Caltech, Yuen completed a number of papers, including one paper he\nco-authored with his supervisor James Beck. The first in the field of\nstructural health monitoring to discuss model class selection, the paper was\nranked among the ten most cited papers, out of several thousand, published by the\nJournal of Engineering Mechanics of the American Society of Civil Engineers. In\nthe years that followed, he compiled his key research results into a book\ntitled \u2018Bayesian Methods for Structural Dynamics and Civil Engineering\u2019,\narousing tremendous interest in his field. In fact, the book became a classic.\nLooking back, Yuen says that he is glad he didn\u2019t land a job at UM in 1998.\nWith a master\u2019s degree, he couldn\u2019t have excelled beyond the post of lecturer,\nand would not have accomplished all the good things that followed. To this day,\nhe is grateful to Prof Iu for his career-changing advice.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

Life Is about Impact on Other Lives<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Dynamics\nbetween people often produce unpredictable outcomes and uncanny e\ufb00ects. Yuen is\na believer in \u2018one life impacting other lives\u2019. Tis belief underlines his\nmission as a teacher. \u2018Even if you manage to publish 200 academic papers, they\nmay not amount to much. But if you could change and improve a single life, the gratification\nwould be far greater,\u2019 he says. \u2018I am especially happy when students come up to\nme and tell me that I have opened their eyes to the essence or magic of\nmathematics. Education is about changing lives.\u2019<\/p>\n\n

Over\nthe years, it has been Yuen\u2019s practice to select one or two outstanding\nstudents as his mentees. These lucky individuals are, needless to say,\ntypically academically gifted students. But there are exceptions. One of them\nis his student Mu Heqing, whose academic performance was not the most impressive.\nBut in his after-class discussions with this student, Yuen discovered that Mu had\nother gifs; he had a mind of his own. Yuen trusted his instinct that \u2018doing\nresearch is a di\ufb00erent kettle of fish from mere book learning\u2019. Earning good\ngrades is not the same as being a good researcher. Yuen decided to take Mu\nunder his wing. Not only that, he recommended his mentee for two six-month exchange\nprogrammes that covered stints at both the Caltech and the University of California,\nBerkeley. The lucky student even had the privilege of studying under Yuen\u2019s former\nteacher James Beck. Upon earning his PhD at UM, Mu landed a teaching job at the\nSouth China University of Technology, where he was promoted to associate\nprofessor within 18 months.<\/p>\n\n

In\n2015, on the basis of their previous research collaboration, Yuen and Mu\njointly created a system for real-time structural health monitoring, thus\nlaying the foundation for a paper that was later published by the authoritative\nComputer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering. That paper was the second\nmost cited among 120 others published by the journal in 2015 and 2016.<\/p>\n\n

Yuen\npours his heart into mentoring and inspiring his students, making him one of\nthe most popular teachers in FST. He not only teaches theories, but also stresses\nthe importance of application and implementation. Figuratively, he has taken his\nstudents out of the ivory tower. While on UM\u2019s former campus, Yuen and his\nstudents spent five years on all-weather monitoring of the condition of the\nEast Asia Hall, studying the long-term structural e\ufb00ects of temperature, humidity,\nand other environmental factors. His team even observed the extreme behaviour\nof the building under severe storm conditions. At Yuen\u2019s urging, his student,\nMs. Kuok Sin-Chi, also took part in the National Challenge Cup, and won first\nprize, the first-ever such award by a Macao student.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n

\u2018<\/b>I was born with military discipline\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Yuen\nis not just a leader in Bayesian methods for structural dynamics, he is also\nthe first scholar at UM to become a full professor before the age of 35. He was\nthe head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, associate\ndean (academic a\ufb00airs) of the Faculty of Science and technology, associate dean\n(research and graduate studies) of the same faculty, a member of the\nAdministrative Committee of UMTec Limited, and an academic advisor of the\nResearch and Development Administration Office. In 2012, he was listed in the\nPeople\u2019s Republic of China\u2019s Science and Technology Programmes Expert Database,\nand in the National Science and Technology Award Panel Expert Database. Yuen is\ncomfortable in assuming various roles and responsibilities, a result of his\nlong years of self-discipline and hard work.<\/p>\n\n

In\n2008, John Wiley & Sons discussed a book project with Yuen, asking him to\nfinish his manuscript within 24 months. However, he took just 15 months to\ncomplete the book-writing. At that time, he had taken on the role as the head\nof the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, with an onerous\nincrease in administrative work. On top of that, his wife was pregnant with\ntheir second child. Both domestically and professionally, Yuen\u2019s plate was\nfull. But he took it all in stride. He says, smiling, \u2018I am a man with military\ndiscipline, and will adhere strictly to a pre-set time-table. If I slacken my\npace, precious time will be lost. If I am given ten days to finish an assigned\ntask, my target is to get it done within three days. By getting it done ahead\nof time, I earn extra time to make sure that the job is done to perfection. This\nwill give me the cushion to deal with the unexpected.\u2019 To keep himself in\nshape, he jogs 30 kilometers a week, 52 weeks a year, rain or shine. This is\npart of his personal discipline regimen which he has followed religiously for\nover a decade.<\/p>\n\n

 <\/b><\/p>\n\n

Opportunity Favours the Prepared<\/b><\/p>\n\n

Yuen\nlooks back with fondness on his undergraduate years in Taiwan. Pressure was\npalpable. In his first year, Yuen was assigned to study calculus under Prof\nTong Un-Hien. Senior students warned him against taking his course: \u2018Forget\nabout studying under him. You are bound to fail,\u2019 they said. It is true that\nTong was notorious for \ufb02unking up to two thirds of his students. Out of a class\nof 50-plus students, only six or seven would make the grade after two\nsemesters. But Yuen was undeterred. He poured himself into the coursework and rose\nto the challenge, emerging triumphant as the top-ranked student in the course.<\/p>\n\n

All\nhis life, Yuen has learned to cope with pressure. He is practically\npressure-proof from years of domestic discipline summed up in two things:\nresilience and a refusal to admit defeat. \u2018Tanks to my mother, I have acquired\nsoft power in these two forms,\u2019 he says. \u2018They were part of my growing up, and\npart of what got me through my low ebbs in life. I project positivity in\nadversity. Besides, I use sport and reading to enrich myself, to keep myself\nprimed for the bigger challenges of the future.\u2019 He adds, \u2018When you are\nprepared, opportunity will come knocking. But if you are unprepared, it may\nknock, but you won\u2019t be there to answer the door.\u2019<\/p>\n\nBeing prepared, and never turning down an\nassigned task, are two characteristics which invite opportunity. In Yuen\u2019s\nview, there is no such thing as an easy victory. Triumph takes time, and is\nearned step-by-step. Above all, the desire to win must come from within. In the\nfullness of time, that will make all the di\ufb00erence in the world.
