Barrier-free public facilities are considered to be crucial to the lives\nof the disadvantaged and people with mobility impairments. Smart city technology\nis important to social development, but unfortunately, there is a lack of\nresearch studies in this field which contribute to the creation of barrier-free\nliving environments. With this in mind, our research team has applied research\noutcomes in smart city technology to the design of an innovative and convenient\nsmart wheelchair, a practical product whose aim is to help the disadvantaged\nand the elderly in their daily lives.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:\nnormal;\">Multifunction Intelligent Electric\nWheelchair<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Designed\nwith human factors engineering and ergonomic concepts in combination with\nartificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, our innovative multifunction\nIntelligent Electric Wheelchair can satisfy the needs of the disadvantaged and\nthe elderly with mobility impairments. The chair can be controlled via three methods:\nmuscle signal control (EMG), brain wave control (EEG), and mobile application.<\/p>\n\n<p>Our\nresearch study has three core components: the multi-control methods of the\nIntelligent Electric Wheelchair, innovative function design, and appearance\ndesign. The design of the chair is ergonomic and takes into consideration the\nhuman anatomy of Macao residents. The smart wheelchair allows a variety of seating\npositions so users can adopt di\ufb00erent postures. Tis function helps to improve\nusers\u2019 health by preventing them from staying in the same posture for too long.\nDi\ufb00erent control methods, including Myo armband, EEG, and mobile applications,\ncan benefit di\ufb00erent users according to their individual needs in di\ufb00erent\nenvironments.<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:\nnormal;\">&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:\nnormal;\">Adjust Gesture Armbands to Meet Local\nNeeds<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Gestural\ncontrol methods enabled by Myo armband equipment may be used to control the\nIntelligent Electric Wheelchair. However, this feature is currently limited to\nfive di\ufb00erent gestures, including wave in\/out, spread, double tap, and fist. In\nthe future, we plan to develop more gestures to fulfill specific needs of\ndi\ufb00erent users. In addition, the armband was originally designed for Western\noperators, whose arm muscles are di\ufb00erent than those of Asians. Tus, the\naccuracy of gesture recognition on the armband require further adjustment to\nmeet the needs of Macao residents. To improve the armband\u2019s gesture prediction function,\nthe research team studied the autoregressive method by the Akaike information\ncriterion, Wavelet method in intensity analysis, and the Hilbert-Huang transform\nmethod. The team also extracted significant factors from surface\nelectroMyography of muscles and used them to predict gestures, with the help of\nvarious machine learning techniques, including Genetic Algorithms&#8211;Back\nPropagation Neural Network method, Particle Swarm Optimisation&#8211;Back\nPropagation Neural Network method, Support Vector Machine method, and Extreme\nLearning Machine method. This allows the Myo armband to be used by the\ndisadvantaged and the elderly in Macao.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:\nnormal;\">Intelligent Wheelchair Control System<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>This\nIntelligent Electric Wheelchair has been designed with ergonomic concepts and\nAI algorithms to provide di\ufb00erent innovative functions. The chair can collect data\nfrom the user\u2019s body, such as pressure mapping data of various seating postures\nand EMG signal. The data can help to improve the design of buildings and\nfacilities which the SAR government or public departments may construct in the future.\nFor example, public facilities, such as bus stops or parks, can be enhanced\nwith the help of this scientific data, which will ultimately improve the\nquality of life of the disadvantaged and the elderly by using smart city\ntechnology.<\/p>\n\n<p>Wheelchairs\ncan easily create pressure ulcers in elderly users because they demand long\nperiods of sitting time. In order to solve this problem, based on the pressure\ndata of human body surface, in the future our team will use machine learning\nalgorithms and neural network algorithms to derive a mathematical model for the\nprediction of pressure ulcers. Based on this model, our research team will\ndevelop an intelligent wheelchair nonlinear control system.
