In order to increase local primary and secondary school students’ interest in science, the University of Macau (UM) in June and July this year will hold a series of summer camp in various fields. It helps to deepen and extend students’ understanding of science and engineering knowledge with hands-on experience and vivid on-site practical demonstration.

In particular, the newly organized primary school summer camp–Primary Students STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) Summer Camp. This camp is attempted for fifth- and sixth-grade students. It is the first kind of camp in Macao that combines STEM education with interactive learning activities and arts based on Macao’s Basic Academic Attainment. The camp aims to nurture students’ curiosity, creativity and capability about STEM-related topics. It is jointly organised by the Faculty of Education (FED) and Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), and the coordinators are Dr Oon Pey Tee, Dr Mak Chi Kuan and Dr Lei Si Man from the FED , and Prof Tam Kam Weng and Senior Instructor Miguel Costa from the FST that coordinate for science and engineering topics.

In addition, the summer camps for secondary students are Climate Change and Civil Engineering Summer Camp, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Summer Camp, 3D Reconstruction with Quadcopters Summer Camp, Deep Learning and Computer Vision (DeepVision) Summer Camp, Wireless Technology Study Summer Camp and Smart Transportation Summer Camp from FST. The Development of a Sustainable Cyanobacteria System for Endocrine Disrupting Compounds Degradation from Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS); Sustainable Energy Storage Systems Summer Camp from FST/Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME) and Plan of Potential Development – Biotechnology from Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) and University of Macau State Key Lab of Microelectronic IC design experience Summer Camp from Institute of Microelectronics (IME).

Established in June 2018, the Macao Base for Primary & Secondary STEM Education aims to promote science popularisation and STEM education in collaboration with the Science and Technology Development Fund, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, the Chinese Educators’ Association of Macau, Macau Catholic Schools Association, Macao Science Center, and Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau. With UM’s Centre for Science and Engineering Promotion of FST as the core component, the base launches STEM programmes to support science popularisation in Macao and to provide continuous training for teachers and students from local primary and secondary schools. The base’s supporting units are FST, FHS, FED, IAPME and ICMS.
