Philip Chen, chair professor of the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), received a formal letter from Dr Felix Unger, president of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, who congratulates him on being elected a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. In addition, Prof Chen has been recognised as a Global Highly Cited Researcher 2018 in the computer science category by Clarivate Analytics.

The European Academy of Sciences and Arts is an interdisciplinary academic organisation located in Salzburg, Austria. The academy recognises scholars in the following eight fields: humanities; medicine; arts; natural sciences; social sciences, law and economics; technical and environmental sciences; world religions; as well as corporate and public governance. More than 2,000 distinguished individuals, including 31 Nobel laureates, have been elected members of the academy. Prof Chen will attend a membership celebration to be held in March 2019 in Salzburg, where he will accept the membership medal.

In addition, Prof Chen has also been recognised as a Global Highly Cited Researcher 2018 in the computer science category by Clarivate Analytics. Based on the data from the Web of Science, the Global Highly Cited Researchers list identifies influential researchers as determined by their peers around the globe – those who have consistently won recognition in the form of high citation counts for over a decade. In 2018, 96 researchers from the computer science field have been listed as Global Highly Cited Researchers, including 27 Chinese researchers (23 from mainland China, one from Hong Kong, one from Macao, and two from Taiwan). This year China has more Global Highly Cited Researchers than the United States (21 researchers) and is the country with the most recognised researchers. Prof Chen is the only scholar from Macao that has entered the list this year.

Prof Chen’s research interests include intelligent systems and control, computational intelligence, hybrid intelligence, unmanned systems and data science. He is a member of Academia Europaea, fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition, member of the Chinese Association of Automation (CAA), fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and member of the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetics Sciences (IASCYS). Prof Chen is also vice president of the CAA and the editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems.
