Philip Chen, chair professor of the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Science and Technology, received the 2018 Norbert Wiener Award 2018 at the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (IEEE SMC 2018) held in Miyazaki, Japan, in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the areas of machine learning, pattern understanding, and image classification.
In memory of Norbert Wiener, the creator of cybernetics, the Norbert Wiener Award was established in 1980 by the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. The award is regarded as the highest award in the field of cybernetics.
Prof Chen’s research interests include intelligent systems and control, computational intelligence, hybrid intelligence, unmanned systems, and data science. He is a member of Academia Europaea, and a fellow of various prestigious professional organisations, including the IEEE, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Association for Pattern Recognition, the Chinese Association of Automation, and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. He is also an academician of the International Academy of Systems and Cybernetics Science. He was earlier listed by the Web of Science among the world’s highly cited scientists in computer science.
