Two PhD students from the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and State-Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI (AMS-VLSI Lab) recently completed their oral defenses. Their performance in the defenses was highly praised by Prof Donhee Ham, an external examiner and a Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering at Harvard University, United States.
The two PhD candidates are Chen Tianlan and Lei Ka Meng. Their dissertation titles are ‘Thermal Digital Microfluidic Devices for Rapid DNA Analysis’, and ‘Handheld CMOS-Based NMR Devices for Biological/Chemical Diagnosis’, respectively. During their PhD studies, the two students have published academic papers in leading journals and at international conferences, including the International Solid-State Circuits Conference, the IEEE Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference, the International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences, the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, as well as two journals published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), namely Lab on a Chip, and RSC Advances. The students’ supervisor is Elvis Mak Pui-In, an associate professor of the FST and the associate director (research) of the AMS-VLSI Lab.
After the oral defenses, Prof Donhee Ham gave a distinguished lecture, titled ‘From Flatland Electrodynamics to Molecular Spectroscopy and Neurotechnology with Solid‐State Chips’, at UM. The lecture covered new solid-state materials and systems that can be applied to various scientific fields, including physics, electrical engineering, and biology.
