Prof Sylvia Ieong, gender equity officer of the University of Macau (UM) and director of the Rector’s Office, was invited to attend the 18th Annual International Conference on Women and Education at the University of Oxford. During the event, Prof Ieong’s presentation, entitled “Legislation, Internal Guidelines and Education for Preventing and Handling Sexual Harassment on Campus”, was well appreciated by other contributors at the conference. In the meantime, she also took this opportunity to share ideas with other scholars on related issues.

In her presentation, Prof Ieong shared some of UM’s efforts to formulate internal guidelines by drawing on existing international conventions, national and local laws, to establish University gender equity policies, and to enhance gender equity awareness by educating the university community, both staff and students, with well-defined internal guidelines and specific procedures in place to prevent sexual harassment and other gender offences and handle them effectively. UM’s meticulous efforts via the Gender Equity Promotion Committee (a workgroup consisting of representatives from all the ten higher education institutions in the Macao and facilitated by the Tertiary Education Services Office of the MSAR Government) was also brought to the attention of the conference participants.

Having developed from a young university to one of the world’s most international universities (ranked No 6 in the Times Higher Education Top 200 Most International Universities in the World 2016), UM is now faced with various new challenges in achieving its goals, one of them being the development of a safe, healthy and collegial campus upholding gender equity and embracing cultural diversity.
