Learning of the magnitude 8 earthquake in Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province, and the devastation it has made there, the University of Macau (UM) has instantly called upon its staff and students to provide for the victims. Over the past few days, the campus was filled with love and care, especially around the donation counters encompassed by donators. Until 19 May, UM has collected a donation of over MOP470 thousand at the first phase. The sum, together with nearly 400 wish cards full of the benedictions for the victims, were delivered to Macau Red Cross yesterday (20 May) by Prof. Iu Vai Pan, Rector of UM, Katrina Cheong, Head of the Information and Public Relations Office, Gao Xuezhi, representative of the UM Students’ Union (UMSU), Xu Yiwei and Hu Han from Sichuan, representatives of the Chinese Mainland Student Association, UMSU. They were received by Chiang Sao Meng, Vice President of Macau Red Cross.

In mourning for the victims in Sichuan, UM has called for its staff and students to observe three minutes of silence at 2:28pm on 19 May and during the three national mourning days, its flags would be lowered at half mast. Seeing that ongoing work such as the relocation and the reconstruction of the victims needs to be supported, UM will carry out donation drives at several phases. On the coming Friday, a Charity Concert for Sichuan Earthquake Victims will be held to raise fund for Sichuan’s reconstruction.
