The Macau Academic Library Alliance (MALA) E-Resources Centre, a virtual platform developed by the University of Macau (UM), has been launched. From now on, faculty members and students from the nine higher education institutions in Macao can have free access to the MALA’s electronic resources.

Sponsored by the Tertiary Education Services Office, the MALA E-Resources Centre houses scientific journal databases which member libraries of the alliance subscribe to, the Macau databases developed by UM Library, as well as various electronic documents. Earlier, the MALA launched a new library card service which allows faculty members and students to borrow books from any of the nine member libraries. In the future, the MALA E-Resources Centre will continue to increase the size of its databases in order to provide rich academic resources for faculty members and students in Macao.

Proposed by the Tertiary Education Services Office, the MALA was established in May 2013, with assistance from the Macao Library and Information Management Association. Member libraries of the alliance include UM, Macao Polytechnic Institute, the Institute for Tourism Studies, Macau Security Forces Training College, the Macau University of Science and Technology, the City University of Macau, the University of Saint Joseph, Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau, and the Macau Institute of Management. The alliance aims to strengthen collaboration among university libraries in order to achieve cost-effectiveness in library procurement, resource development and sharing, inter-library loan, and administrative expenses.
