The University of Macau’s (UM) Department of Chinese and the Research Centre for Humanities in South China today (26 November) held an opening ceremony for the International Symposium on “the Status and Future of the Chinese Humanities”. Wang Meng, a renowned writer, former minister of culture of PRC, and writer-in-residence at UM, attended the opening ceremony and expressed three expectations for UM’s Department of Chinese—first, becoming at once highly international and highly Chinese; second, developing its own characteristics; and third, fostering its own schools of thought.
