Prof. Harry R. Lewis, Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science at Harvard University, will visit the University of Macau on 31 October 2012 to give an open lecture entitled “General Education and the Moral Rote of Universities” at 16:00 in Room HG03.

In the open lecture, Prof. Lewis will share his views about civic and moral purposes in higher education which he believes are suffering today because they have been eclipsed by other values, often worthy values, which universities now find more important. But as the Internet makes universities less needed as a way to transfer knowledge from professors to students, it is perhaps the time to once again emphasize the moral mission of universities. General education is one of ways to reclaim the teaching of shared values.

Prof. Lewis is the author and co-author of numerous books including Excellence Without a Soul: Does Liberal Education have a Future?; Blown to Bits: Your Life, Liberty, and Happiness After the Digital Explosion and What is College For? The Public Purpose of Higher Education.
