Wan Gang visits the State Key Laboratory for Quality Research in Chinese Medicine

Today (30 March 2012), Wan Gang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and minister of science and technology of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), along with his colleagues, visited the University of Macau (UM) and made special stops at the two state key laboratories. During his meeting with UM’s top management, Wan Gang said that UM has a very clear goal, which is to become a world-class university with character. He expressed his hope that UM can continue to make innovations, well fulfill its social role, and attain new developments from the new starting point.

A total of fourteen people led by Wan Gang visited UM and were warmly received by UM’s management, including University Council Chair Tse Chi Wa, Rector Wei Zhao, Vice Rector (Research) Rui Martins, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Philip Chen, and Director of the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences Wang Yitao. During the meeting, Wan Gang said that no university in the world can cover all academic disciplines, and so it is good that UM has set a very clear goal, which is to become a world-class university with character. He said that a university cannot realize sustainable development without the support of society, and UM should strive to make significant contributions to the progress of Macao society. Wan Gang quoted an old Chinese saying, “It takes ten years to sharpen a sword,” to praise scientific research at UM, saying that it takes at least ten to twenty years to achieve something in scientific research, and so UM should create an open environment that encourages innovation and allows research personnel to concentrate on research, because only by doing so can UM create a steady supply of talent for sustainable development in scientific research. He added that the Ministry of Science and Technology will adopt a supportive and open attitude, whether in national science and technology programmes, the research base, or human resource development. In closing, he expressed his hope that UM can continue to make innovations, well fulfill its social role, enhance cooperation and exchange with other universities, and attain new developments from the new starting point.

During the meeting, Rector Wei Zhao shared the history of UM, the construction progress of the new UM campus, and the new “4-in-1” pedagogical model. Wei Zhao stressed that UM’s strategies in scientific research include placing dual emphasis on basic research and applied research; focusing on personnel training and developing cross-disciplinary, cross-regional platform for international cooperation; as well as insisting on quality and identifying priorities. Afterwards, Rui Martins and Wang Yitao shared the history and research achievements of the two state key labs. After the meeting, the guests visited the two labs to learn more about the ongoing research projects.
