Students play the Trust Walk game

The University of Macau’s (UM) Honours College (HC) organized a team building camp for the Class of 2014 at the Macau Tower on 7 January. The theme of the camp was Leadership Enhancement Adventure (LEAD), and the main purpose was to enhance students’ esprit de corps and strengthen their mutual understanding and trust.

This camp, aimed at providing students with challenging leadership experiences, is an important component of the honours course HONR202 – Development of Leadership Skills. It has been held successfully in the past two years through a series of team building activities and ultimate challenges, enabling the participants to increase their confidence and the ability to overcome difficulties by encouraging each other.

Under the instructions of the course instructor Dr. Udani, students wore blindfolds and walked around the main outer rim of the tower which is located 233 metres above ground. Five students even overcame their fears and tried the Bungy Jump and Sky Jump. Before the end of the camp, Dr. Udani required the participants to develop a Leadership Enhancement Advancement Project. He hopes that students could achieve a higher level of leadership skills by the end of the semester so as to be well prepared for their studies abroad early next year.

Participants said that in addition to encouraging them to overcome difficulties and fears through high-altitude ultimate challenge, Dr. Udani also arranged a series of team activities to improve their mutual understanding, esprit de corps and leadership potential. For example, in the Trust Walk game, students were divided into groups, and a blindfolded member from each group needed to walk on a specified route while simultaneously holding an egg on a spoon in the mouth to the assigned finish point, with directions from their teammates. These activities have effectively enhanced students’ mutual trust and communication skills.
