The Report on the Study of Human Trafficking in Macao, which was commissioned to the Educational Research Centre, Faculty of Education, University of Macau (UM), by the Human Trafficking Deterrent Measures Concern Committee, has been completed. A press conference was held on 17 October, at which Prof. Vong Sou Kuan and Dr. Sze Tat Ming announced the research results.

The Human Trafficking Deterrent Measures Concern Committee commissioned UM to conduct this evaluation research in order to review the relevant laws and policies on human trafficking as well as their implementation and the present situation. The research aims to investigate Macao people’s awareness of and attitude towards the issue of human trafficking, and also seeks to understand the policies, measures, and promotional and educational activities aimed at deterring human trafficking in the neighboring regions, in order to provide a basis for the Macao SAR government’s policy-making.

The research team used four research methods, namely text analysis, telephone survey, interview and case study. In order to evaluate and enhance the participants’ awareness of the importance of combating human trafficking, the team interviewed eleven government departments and agencies, seven non-governmental organizations, five Hong Kong organizations, ten teachers and eighteen local students. A random telephone survey targeting Macao residents aged twelve and above was also conducted to obtain data.
