ConteúdoAs Cinque (2017) has pointed out, “Even if Chomsky (1972) and Jackendoff (1972) had put information structure on the agenda, it was only with Rizzi (1997) that we started seeing strong empirical and conceptual evidence for a specific syntacticization of information structure,” which brought up what we know now as a new field called Cartographic Syntax today. Following Rizzi and Cinque’s steps in terms of cartographically syntacticizing information structures, it is argued, in this paper, that the register categories of formal/informal styles can also be cartographicalized in syntax. In this presentation I will first introduce the notion of register grammar, based on recent studies by Feng 2003, 2010, Wang 2009, 2017, Feng & Vihan 2014, Luo 2016, Chan 2917 and Feng & Shi 2017, among others. And secondly, it is argued further that the register devices can be interpreted in terms cartographical structures. It is shown that there are strong empirical evidence supporting the hypothesis that cartographicalized grammatical information are encoded with formal and informal register categories in human communication systems.
