Following the principle of “studying Macao and serving the community”, the Centre for Macau Studies of the University of Macau has always been committed to studying the development of Macao in various spheres such as politics, economy, society, and culture. With the support from the Macau Foundation, it published the Blue Book of Macao: Annual Report on Economy and Society of Macao (2008-2009) last year, and this year it has published the Blue Book of Macao: Annual Report on Economy and Society of Macao (2009-2010).

Prof. Hao Yufan and Wu Zhiliang are chief editors of this book. Published by the Social Sciences Academic Press (China), the book is divided into four parts, namely “General Report”, “Economy and Trade”, “Society”, and “Politics and Legal Systems”. “General Report” mainly analyzes the great challenges faced by the society and the government as a result of the rapid economic development of Macao over the past decade since its return to the motherland. “Economy and Trade”, which consists of 12 research reports, mainly discusses the impact of the global financial crisis on Macao’s economy as well as the latest development in the industrial diversification of Macao under such an impact. This part covers a wide range of subjects such as gambling, tourism, finance, real estate, transport infrastructure, development of Hengqin Island, regional cooperation, and foreign relations, etc.

“Society” elaborates on Macao’s progress in medical care and health, public security, environmental protection, and literary creation over the past decade as well as existing problems in these areas. “Politics and Legal Systems” not just gives a macro-picture of the changes Macao has experienced over the past decade in political development, legal reform, the relations between the government and the society, but it also provides in-depth analysis of the local media’s roles, civic culture, and political participation by using hot news such as the 2009 election of the new leadership of the SAR Government and the 2009 election of Legislative Assembly members as real-life examples.
