The University of Macau (UM) Centre for Macau Studies (CMS) today (26 September) held a launch for the Chinese version of a new book titled ‘The Macau Portuguese – Courage, Endurance and Adaptation’. A collaborative project between the CMS and the International Institute of Macau, the book aims to shed some light on the history and the unique culture of Macanese people in Macao.

Initiated by Rui Martins, vice rector (global affairs) of UM, the book took two years to complete. It was written by António M Jorge da Silva, who is himself a Macanese, translated into Chinese by UM alumnus Davis Ip, and published by Chung Hwa Book Co (Hong Kong). During the book launch, the author presented the book to the libraries of UM, the Macau University of Science and Technology, the City University of Macau, and the Institute for Tourism Studies. He also shared his experiences of writing the book and presented precious historical documents and hand-drawn maps and paintings about the old Macao.
