The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE) 2019 will be held in Macao from Monday 8 April to Thursday 11 April. During the event, experts, scholars, and industry practitioners from around the world will share their latest research findings and technologies in related fields. It will be the first time that the ICDE is held in Macao as well as the first time that UM hosts the event.

One of the world’s top conferences in data engineering, the annual event has been held in various cities in the United States, Europe and Asia previously. The host for the conference is selected through a rigorous process with interested institutions submitting bids two years in advance. UM’s winning the bid shows international recognition of its research capacity.

Co-organised by UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, this year’s conference will focus on issues related to the design, creation, management, and evaluation of advanced data-intensive systems and their applications. The conference places a great emphasis on the quality of papers it accepts, with an acceptance rate of about 18 per cent in 2017. This year, a paper from UM, titled ‘KARL: Fast Kernel Aggregation Queries’, which is co-authored by U Leong Hou, an associate professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science, and other scholars, has been accepted for presentation at the conference.
