Xie Danpeng, a PhD student from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), University of Macau (UM), recently received the Best Student Paper Award at the International Conference on Microwave and Millimeter Wave Technology (ICMMT) 2018. Titled ‘Microstrip Leaky-Wave Antennas with Periodical Loading of Shorting Pins’, Xie’s paper was ranked No 1 with the highest total score among all student papers at the conference.

The contest attracted 184 students from universities around the world. Only ten students were shortlisted as finalists. Three of them received the Best Student Paper Awards. Xie’s supervisor is Distinguished Professor Zhu Lei from the FST. The paper proposed for the first time a novel type of microstrip leaky-wave antennas with periodical loading of shorting pins. By utilising the inductive loading effect of periodic shorting pins, a fundamental leaky-wave EH0 mode was realised, which broke through the strip width limitation confined by transverse resonant condition of traditional higher-order microstrip leaky-wave antennas. The paper was highly praised by experts in microwave and millimeter wave technology for its novelty and significance.

Launched in 1998, the annual ICMMT is one of the most important international conferences in the field of microwave and millimeter wave technology. This year’s conference was held in Chengdu, Sichuan province. The conference received 641 papers from 13 countries and regions. This year, the ICMMT, National Conference on Microwave and Millimeter Waves, and International Wireless Symposium were held together at the same place, at the same time, constituting the first China Microwave Week. 1,330 papers were presented at the conference and over 2,000 experts and scholars gathered at the conference to exchange ideas on the latest developments in microwave and millimeter wave technology.
