UM’s senior management visited CUHK

This year senior management of the University of Macau (UM) visited numerous domestic and overseas universities to borrow their experience in campus design as well as management of residential colleges. During a recent visit to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) which is the first university in Asia to adopt the residential college system, UM’s delegation exchanged views with CUHK’s top management on various issues regarding UM’s new campus, such as the residential college system, architectural design, and management, etc.

On 27 June, 2009, the 9th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People’s Congress adopted a bill that authorizes Macao SAR to exercise jurisdiction over UM’s new campus on Hengqin Island. The design of the new campus will be people-oriented, efficient, and eco-friendly. Ten residential colleges with diverse styles will be built to accommodate undergraduate students and enable UM to pursue whole person education.

To this end, UM’s senior management visited numerous universities in the US, Singapore and Mainland, including Yale University and Princeton University which adopt the residential college system, Baylor University, National University of Singapore, Republic Polytechnic, Nanyang Technological University, National Library Singapore, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Tongji University, South China Normal University, South China University of Technology, Zhuhai Architectural Design Institute, Beijing Normal University, and Hong Kong Baptist University. The unique management modes, systems, campus design, teaching facilities, and environmental protection measures of these universities provide brilliant models for UM in the design and management of its own new campus.

Recently UM’s delegation, along with some consultants and experts, visited CUHK, the first university in Asia to adopt the residential college system. UM representatives including University Council Chair Dr. Daniel Tse, UM Rector Wei Zhao, Vice Rector Dr. Alex Lai, Registrar Paul Pang, Campus Management Office Director Mr. Song Kit Io, Head of Information and Public Relations Office Ms. Katrina Cheong, were warmly received by CUHK’s top management including Vice-Chancellor Lawrence J. Lau. Mr. Lau gave detailed information on CUHK’s management mode as well as the operational mode of each residential college. After that UM delegation visited building groups on the campus and paid special attention to their architectural styles and design philosophies. Apart from CUHK, UM delegation also visited the University of Hong Kong, Lingnan University, and Hong Kong Institute of Education, in order to exchange experience in various areas with these universities.
