Davy Liu, the first ethnic Chinese to join in the production of Walt Disney feature animations, recently gave a talk, titled ‘Dreams for Cows and Cowboys – Pursue Personal Creativity Mindset’, at the University of Macau (UM), as part of the activities on the Collegiate Leaning Day. Despite being considered an ‘unintelligent’ child by his parents and teachers during his childhood, Liu went on to become a successful animator who has participated in the production of many world-famous animations, including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Mulan. Liu later founded his own animation company Kendu Films, which is named after his motto ‘can do’.

During his talk, Liu repeatedly told the students ‘Don’t treat diamond as marble’, in order to encourage them to have confidence in themselves and to believe that their dreams are as precious as diamonds. He added that it is important for the students to be creative and to become a unique ‘cowboy’ that can lead the ‘cows’ through obstacles.

Liu also participated in a sharing session in Lui Che Woo College. During the event, he shared the creative and marketing process of The Lion King. He also discussed the exquisite animation design of Mulan and the differences between the characteristics of Eastern and Western animations. In addition, he drew on his experience to show the students how to learn more about themselves.
