The University of Macau (UM) will hold a scientific talk titled ‘Is Human Intelligence Outsmarted by Artificial Intelligence? AlphaGo’s Secret’ on 23 March. Prof Lionel Ni, vice rector (academic affairs) of UM and chair professor in the university’s Department of Computer and Information Science, will be the keynote speaker.

Is artificial intelligence a gift to mankind or does it pose a serious challenge? Is the crushing 4-1 defeat of Korea’s 9-dan Go grandmaster and world champion by the Google-developed AlphaGo a cause for celebration, curiosity, or fear? Or is it something to be shrugged off? The great leap forward in the storage and processing capability of the computer can be seen in the awesome power of big data and intuitive artificial intelligence. In the talk, Prof Lionel Ni will explain the real difference between human intelligence and artificial intelligence in layman’s terms. The path-breaking innovations of computer algorithms and the discovery of gravitational waves in physics will both be celebrated as signs of the wisdom of mankind, and the enormous attractions of science.

The talk will be held in Room G062, Anthony Lau Building (E4), UM, at 5:00pm. It will be conducted in Mandarin, with simultaneous interpretation into English. All are welcome. Those who are interested in attending the talk should complete online registration at https://isw.um.edu.mo/evm/register/alphago. For enquiries, please call 8822 8037.
