Prof Hong Gang Jin, dean of the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH), and Prof Maria Fernanda Costa, head of UM’s Department of Portuguese, recently visited Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) and Zhejiang International Studies University (ZISU) to explore opportunities for collaboration in Portuguese language education and research. UM and the two universities have undertaken to sign collaboration agreements on academic exchange in the field.

UM’s delegation was received by Prof Yu Man, director of SISU’s School of European and Latin American Studies; Prof Catarina Xu, director of SISU’s Department of Portuguese; Prof Xu Yueming, deputy dean of ZISU’s School of European Languages and Cultures; and Lu Chunhui, a senior instructor of ZISU’s Department of Portuguese.

Members of UM’s delegation and representatives of SISU and ZISU exchanged ideas on student exchange, research collaboration, and academic conferences. Both mainland universities agree to strengthen collaboration with UM in the three areas, and have expressed interest in sending third-year students from their Portuguese programmes to UM for academic exchange. Prof Jin proposed establishing a platform for academic exchange and research collaboration, with the assistance of faculty members from both parties. During the meeting, Prof Jin and Prof Costa also shared information with the two universities about UM’s Department of Portuguese, including its plan to offer new master’s degree programme and PhD programme in Portuguese. Lastly, UM’s delegation members invited SISU and ZISU to participate in the forthcoming International Conference on Teaching and Learning Portuguese as a Second Language, to be held by UM’s Department of Portuguese in April 2016.

The FAH and the two universities have undertaken to sign collaboration agreements on Portuguese language education and research, which is of great importance. UM hopes to build up long-term collaboration relationships with more universities, in order to create a better environment for Portuguese teaching and learning, and to continue to make contributions to the development of Portuguese language education in Macao and mainland China.
