The University of Macau’s (UM) Department of Mathematics recently held a seminar on computational and applied mathematics. The seminar attracted dozens of experts and scholars from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao. During the event, the participants had an in-depth discussion on their latest research findings as well as various topics in the field, including computational physics, multiscale modeling and computation, and fast numerical methods.

In his opening speech, Department of Mathematics Prof Jin Xiaoqing said that the department has gained increasing international recognition in recent years, thanks to the joint effort of experts and scholars in the field and the support of UM. He added that the seminar provided a platform for mathematicians to discuss the latest developments in the area of computational and applied mathematics, which is very beneficial to UM faculty and students.

Participants in the seminar included Prof Tang Tao from the Department of Mathematics, South University of Science and Technology of China; Prof Xu Kun from the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Prof Lu Tiao from the School of Mathematical Sciences, Peking University; Jin Changqiu, a researcher from the Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics; Prof Qiao Zhonghua from the Department of Applied Mathematics, Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Zhou Tao, a researcher from the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as Prof Sun Haiwei, Prof Tam Sik Chung, Prof Vong Seak Weng, Dr Lei Siu Long, and Dr Hu Guanghui from UM’s Department of Mathematics.
