Wei Dan, lecturer of the Faculty of Law (FLL) of the University of Macau (UM), has obtained a PhD in Law from the University of Coimbra in Portugal, hence becoming the first Chinese to reap such laurels.

Wei Dan delved into her PhD programme under the supervision of Professor Manuel Carlos Lopes Porto and Professor José Joaquim Gomes Canotilho of the University of Coimbra. On 5 June 2006, Wei Dan passed the oral defense for her PhD thesis entitled “Globalisation and National Interests: the China Perspective” and was awarded Honor and Laud which implies great distinction. The examination jury consisted of eight professors from the University of Coimbra and one from FLL of UM. As one of the oldest European universities with a history of more than 7 centuries, the University of Coimbra enjoys a national and Continental-wide reputation for its discipline of law. Among a small number of Law doctorate holders in the University of Coimbra, Wei Dan features for her pride-worthy achievement that has not ever been attained by any Chinese before.
