Jack Wu, Trombone, FST

I’ve been playing the trombone for 12 years now . Even with a heavy workload at school, I’ve never stopped playing it. My father has been very supportive over the years and often shares his collections of live recordings of well-kno wn tunes. I started practicing trombone twice a week at the Student Activity Centre after I moved onto the new campus. Music has not only enriched my life; it also helps improve my mood.

Jack won the first prize in the individual category in the Art Festival of Haidian District in Beijing. He has also performed at the Variety Show for PRC’s National Day at UM.

Elaine Ao, Guitar and Alto singing, FED

I have two guitars in my room at the residential college, and I teach myself new techniques and practice almost every day. Sometimes I play music with friends on the campus. Music is part of my life, and I’ll keep on practicing to improve my skills.

Elaine is a member of UM’s Guitar Association and the leader of Siu Pong College Choir’s alto section. She has performed at several High Table Dinners.

Jeff Lam, Piano, FSS

I fell in love with piano after watching Jay Chou’s film Secret. And now I’ve already passed the top-level certification exam for professional piano players. Despite many obstacles along the way, I keep on practicing on a daily basis. I believe persistence is the key to success.

Jeff was the champion of the Macau Youth Original Music Competition. He regularly performs at wedding banquets.

Fiona Choi, Violin, FSS

I was deeply moved by Antonio Vivaldi’s Spring Concerto when I was a child. And I have been in love with the sound of violin ever since. Many of my friends at UM share my interest in music. I still remember how they gave up their free time to practice with me for a concert in my freshman year, and I really appreciate their effort. Thanks to the new campus, we no longer need to go out in the evening to practice. It’s much more convenient now.

Fiona was the deputy director of UM’s String Orchestra. She has performed at and helped organized many concerts.

Violet Ieong, Singing, FSS

When I was little, I knew nothing about singing and didn’t even want to give it a try. But as I got older I began to like singing more and more. I enjoy singing at UM, especially by the lake. I’ve discovered a lot of gifted musicians at UM and have learned a lot from them.

Violet was the champion of the UMSU Music Society’s 7080s Cantonese Singing Contest.
