The Department of History of the University of Macau (UM) and the Macau Foundation will jointly organize the “First International Interdisciplinary Conference on Macau Studies: Intercultural Exchanges between East and West” at UM, from 25 to 27 May 2009, to mark both the 10th anniversary of Macau’s handover to China and the establishment of the Department of History of UM.

Experts and scholars of Macao studies from different parts of the world, such as China, Macau, Hong Kong, Portugal, Taiwan, Korea, Brazil, USA, United Kingdom, Japan, France Italy, and Germany, will meet to discuss the following topics: Remembering Macau (History), Contemporary Visions of Macau, Literary and Cinematographic Macau and Linguistic Macau.

Aside from the keynote speeches, there would also be a session on “Writing Macau” (images of Macau in Western Literature) organized by an international research panel.

The Conference is a significant event and will discuss topics in numerous academic subjects, which reflects the diversity of the researches in relation to Macau studies. For instance, the research fields of scholars of Macau studies cover: History, Sociology, Literary and Cultural Studies, Architecture, Anthropology, Religion and Gender Studies, Local and Regional Studies, Art History, Sino-Western Relations, Maritime History, Politics, Travel Literature, Cinema Studies, Photography, Urban Studies, Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Chinese and Portuguese sources.
