Jointly organized by the Jean Monnet Chair, the Consulate General of Austria in Hong Kong and Macao, the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies, Faculty of Law of the University of Macau (UM), and the Global Affairs Office of UM, the 23rd Jean Monnet Seminar in the academic year 2008-2009, “Combating Maritime Piracy and Terrorism – A European Perspective”, will be held on 1 June at UM. This unique event will be delivered by Judge Helmut Türk, a unique highest ranking representative of the World Court specialized on maritime and Law of the sea matters. Dr. Maria Moya-Götsch, Consul-General of Austria to Hong Kong and Macao, will also attend the seminar.

Piracy has long been a serious issue for global marine, and it jeopardizes the freedom of navigation and creates threats to political and economic stability in the region. Considering the fact that 90% of global trade is conducted in the sea, finding solutions to tackle piracy problem has become a critical agenda issue among all nations. China has just recently engaged its maritime forces in a global operation aimed at combating piracy in the Aden Gulf. For this purpose, Judge Helmut Türk will share his point of view on this issue at this seminar.
