Associate Professor Li Shaoping from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) of the University of Macau (UM) recently received a notice from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) which confirms that Professor Li’s funding application under the Cooperation Project of Oversea, Hong Kong and Macao Scholars, Evaluation on Ganoderma lucidum (Chizhi) and Ganoderma sinense (Zizhi) based on comparative chemistry and integrating pharmacological activities, has been approved. The project will last from January, 2010 to December, 2011 with a funding of RMB 200,000 Yuan.

NSFC is an important part of the national innovation system and mainly provides financial support to basic research and some applied research carried out by universities and/or institutions from all over the country, with priority being given to researchers that possess ideal research facilities and strong research capabilities. The purpose of NSFC funding for the Cooperation Project of Oversea, Hong Kong and Macao Scholars is to encourage Hong Kong, Macao and overseas scholars under the age of 50 to carry out high-quality collaboration with Mainland scientists in scientific research. This project from UM is the only collaborated project in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine to receive NSFC funding in 2009. It is also the only Macao project among the 33 projects in the field of Life Science to receive funding in 2009. Professor Li Shaoping’s Mainland partner on this project is Professor Duan Jin’ao from Najing University of Chinese Medicine.

Professor Li Shaoping has been dedicated to the research in quality control of Chinese medicine since 2002 when ICMS was established. He has been offered sponsorship for several projects of his by the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macau and the Research Committee of UM. Professor Li has published more than 60 research papers in international refereed journals. He is one of the most active scholars in the world in the field of Quality Control of Chinese Medicine. He also serves as the Editorial Board member of Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, a leading international journal on Pharmaceutical Analysis, member of the editorial boards of more than 10 international academic journals, and reviewer for more than 20 SCI journals. His research achievement was awarded by the China Pharmaceutical Association.
