Zhu Wenbo, a master’s student from the Department of Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, received the Best Student Paper Prize at the annual conference of the China New Media Communication Association (CNMCA) held at Fudan University, Shanghai, for his paper entitled “Interpreting the Symbolic Landscape: Fantasy Theme Analysis and Internet Opinion Research”.

The paper is under the direct supervision of Prof. Wu Mei and is part of her research project funded by the University of Macau (UM) Research Committee, the paper applies the fantasy theme analysis of rhetorical criticism to interpret a phenomenon of “the symbolic convergence” in the online debate in China over Mo Yan’s winning the Nobel Prize in Literature.

CNMCA’s annual conference is a leading annual event in new media communication research in China. Of the 200 participants in this year’s conference, two teachers and four students received the Best Paper Prizes. PhD student Yao Qi from the Department of Communication also attended the conference and gave a presentation.
