University of Macau (UM) student Zhou Huan from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, won a second prize at the 13th “Challenge Cup” National Inter-varsity Science and Technology Competition, which was held at Soochow University, for his project entitled “Finite Element Analysis of Double-coped Steel Beams”. Prof. Iu Vai Pan, supervisor of the project, noted that the prize shows recognition of the high quality of teaching and research of the department.

Zhou’s project simulates the tested double-coped steel I-beams using finite element methods and conducts a systematic, parametric study on the effects of three parameters, namely the aspect ratio of cope length to reduced beam depth, the aspect ratio of cope depth to origin beam depth, and the plate thickness of the beam web. A simplified plate model is employed to simulate the coped region, and suggestions are made for designing coped steel I-beam in steel structures.
