Dr. Chan Sui Kau, title donor of the Moon Chun Memorial College (MCM College) of the University of Macau (UM), last Saturday visited UM’s new campus with his extended family. Dr. Chan GBM, GBS, JP, highly complimented UM’s new campus and planted two commemorative cherry trees to mark a singular and foundational moment in the development of the new college.

Dr. Chan, along with Dr. Tse Chi Wai, chair of the University Council, and Prof. Kevin Thompson, master of the MCM College, presided at the ceremony invoking and reflecting the legacy of Dr. Chan’s beloved wife, Mrs. Chan Lam Moon Chun, after whom the MCM College was named. Prof. Thompson spoke of Dr. Chan’s generous contributions to UM, and paid further tribute by conducting the UM Choir in a performance of the Cherry Tree Carol.

Dr. Chan met with students, fellows and faculty members from the MCM College. He developed an easy rapport with the students through warm-up games and encouraged the students to study hard through his own example of working every day even at an advanced age. Dr. Chan also expressed his appreciation of the overall design concept and development of the residential colleges.

Guests who attended the ceremony included Prof. Martin Montgomery, interim dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities; Dr. Patricia Thompson, artistic advisor in the Office of Vice Rector (Student Affairs); M. Elias Rock, representative of the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macao; and M. Loïc Faulon, managing director & designer of LOCO Creative Works Ltd.
