The Department of Portuguese, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Macau (UM), will launch the XXVII Portuguese Language and Culture Summer Programme on 1 July 2013. The programme will last until 26 July 2013. The opening ceremony will take place at the Cultural Centre, UM, on 1 July, at 6:30 pm.

This year’s courses consist of 12 sections at four levels: Beginners’ Level, Basic Level, Intermediate Level, and Advanced Level. Apart from regular classes and practices, the organiser will also arrange colorful cultural and recreational activities for the participants, such as visits, seminars, movies, drawing classes and Portuguese folk dances, etc.

The programme aims to spread knowledge of the Portuguese language and culture.  Approximately 480 students from different Asian countries and regions, including mainland China, Macao, Hong Kong, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, applied for this programme, and 370 were accepted. Local students are entitled to sponsorships from the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau of Macao SAR.

The organiser notes that it is a good thing for students from different Asian countries and regions to gather at UM to learn the Portuguese language and culture because it will help Macao to better fulfill its role as a bridge between eastern and western cultures. Moreover, the programme will give students the opportunity to learn more about the social, economic, political and cultural situations of Macao SAR.
